Germany issues arrest warrant for Lebanon Central Bank chief

23 May 2023; MEMO: Germany has informed Lebanon it has issued an arrest warrant for Central Bank Governor, Riad Salameh, on corruption charges, including forgery, money laundering and embezzlement, a senior judicial source told Reuters on Tuesday.

A second source familiar with the matter confirmed the arrest warrant to Reuters. Salameh has denied any wrongdoing.

Lebanon set to be grey-listed by financial crime watchdog

24 May 2023; MEMO: Lebanon is likely to be placed on a "grey list" of countries under special scrutiny over unsatisfactory practices to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

UAE-US armies launch joint military training exercise

24 May 2023; MEMO: The ground forces of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United States launched the Iron Union 19 joint military exercise, the UAE Defence Ministry said on Twitter.

The UAE ministry said the exercise is being carried out on UAE soil, and aims to develop joint cooperation and coordination between the two sides, and raise combat readiness to reach professionalism in carrying out tasks.

Turkiye arrests Israeli Mossad cell 'spying' on Iranians

24 May 2023; MEMO: Turkiye's National Intelligence Agency (MIT) has uncovered and arrested eleven people said to be part of an Israeli Mossad cell spying on individuals and entities related to Iran, Sabah reported on Tuesday. According to the Turkish newspaper, the mission was accomplished in cooperation with the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in Istanbul.

Turkish opposition calls Erdogan a 'fabricator' over doctored video

ANKARA, May 23 (Reuters) - The man challenging for the Turkish presidency has accused President Tayyip Erdogan of being a "fabricator" after he cited a doctored video to allege opposition links to an outlawed militant Kurdish group ahead of a runoff election on Sunday.

Erdogan repeated the allegation and referred to the doctored video, splicing footage of Kemal Kilicdaroglu and a Kurdish militant, in an interview with state broadcaster TRT late on Monday, despite having been criticised by the opposition for showing it earlier in his campaign.

Iran appoints ambassador to Saudi Arabia: media

TEHRAN, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Iran has appointed Alireza Enayati, a veteran diplomat, as its ambassador to Saudi Arabia, semi-official Fars news agency reported on Monday night.

Enayati used to serve as the Iranian ambassador to Kuwait, foreign minister aide, and a director-general at the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

The appointment of ambassador came after a China-brokered agreement reached by Saudi Arabia and Iran in March to resume diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies and missions within a two-month timeframe.
