UN rights committee to examine Egypt's human rights record

28 Feb 2023; MEMO: The United Nations Human Rights Committee will hold a two-day session this week to examine the Egyptian government's implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The ICCPR is an international human rights treaty ratified by Egypt in 1982 which commits states to respecting civil and political rights of individuals, including the right to life, freedom of religion, speech, assembly, elections and due process.

Around 42,000 Syrians in Turkiye voluntarily went home since quakes: Defence Chief

28 Feb 2023; MEMO: Around 42,000 Syrians in Turkiye have returned to their home country across the border since the 6 February earthquakes centred in Turkiye's southern region, the Turkish National Defence Minister said on Tuesday, Anadolu News Agency reports.

Speaking in the quake-hit Hatay province, Hulusi Akar rebuffed claims that there has been an influx of Syrian refugees to Turkiye via its southern border, calling them "untrue".

Palestine man who helped quake victims in Turkiye killed by Israeli fire on his return

28 Feb 2023; MEMO: Sameh Aktash, a Palestinian who recently helped victims of the 6 February quakes in Turkiye, faced his fate on returning to his country — getting killed by Israeli gunfire in the Occupied West Bank.

Aktash, 37, whose family says he "loved life and helped others in his hometown and in Turkiye, which he adored", was shot in the abdomen.

Israel extremist Minister calls to assassinate Palestinian faction leaders

28 Feb 2023; MEMO: The Israeli National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party called, Monday, for a return to the policy of assassinations and the "elimination" of the Palestinian factions' leaders who, according to him, "incite against Israel".

This came during a visit to an illegal outpost built on Palestinian land in Beita village near the city of Nablus, in the northern Occupied West Bank, before completing its evacuation process.

Egypt reopens newly restored historic Mosque

28 Feb 2023; MEMO: Egypt's historic Mosque of Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, named after the sixth Fatimid Caliph and located in old Cairo, was re-opened for visitors on Monday, 27 February, after renovations, Reuters reports.

The renovation project for Egypt's fourth oldest mosque, and its second largest, began in 2017 with a budget of 85 million Egyptian pounds ($2.8 million).

Israel rejects appeal against demolition of Palestinian primary school in occupied Bethlehem

28 Feb 2023; MEMO: An Israeli court rejected an appeal today against the demolition of a Palestinian primary school in the southern occupied West Bank governorate of Bethlehem, reported Wafa news agency.

Submitted by the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission and the Society of St. Yves, a Catholic human rights organisation, the appeal was against a previous court order to demolish Al-Tahadi School 5 in Beit Taamir.

Israel demolishes Palestinian home in East Jerusalem

28 Feb 2023; MEMO: Israeli municipal authorities demolished a Palestinian-owned home in Occupied East Jerusalem on Tuesday, according to family members, Anadolu News Agency reports.

Hani Al-Hussaini said Israeli authorities cited lack of a building permit for bringing down the house in Jabel Mukaber neighbourhood, south of East Jerusalem.

"The building was constructed about six years ago and was inhabited by a 4-member family," he told Anadolu.
