UAE president pays surprise visit to Qatar

05 Dec 2022; MEMO: The President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al-Nayhan, has made a surprise visit to Qatar at the invitation of the Emir, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani. The brief trip was Bin Zayed's first to Doha since the three-and-a-half year Saudi-led embargo imposed on Qatar ended early last year. The UAE was one of a number of Gulf and other states involved in the embargo.

Turkey's 1st unmanned fighter jet ready for its first flight

05 Dec 2022; MEMO: Turkiye announced that its unmanned fighter jet would soon perform its maiden flight after a take-off test, where it lifted off the ground for a short duration of time, local Turkish media reports.

According to the report, the National Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle System (MIUS), named "Kızılelma", completed its first runway run and autonomous taxiing test last month at an air base in north-western Tekirdag province.

Israel: Netanyahu accuses Lapid, Gantz of spreading lies

06 Dec 2022; MEMO: Israeli Prime Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday accused outgoing Prime Minister Yair Lapid and Defence Minister Benny Gantz of spreading lies about his upcoming coalition government.

Netanyahu accused Lapid of claiming that the Defence Ministry will be taken apart, referring to the coalition agreement with far-right MK Bezalel Smotrich who is set to get control of the Civil Administration – the Defence Ministry's arm in the occupied West Bank.

Algeria signs executive plan for Belt and Road initiative with China

06 Dec 2022; MEMO: Algeria and China signed an executive plan on Monday for the joint development of the Belt and Road initiative, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Algiers has announced. A second agreement was signed regarding cooperation in "important areas" between the two countries extending until 2024.

The Chinese Belt and Road initiative is a project to build roads, ports, railways and industrial zones in 65 countries representing 60 per cent of the global population and providing about a third of the world's total output.

Oil tankers queue up off Turkiye as price cap on Russian crude kicks in

06 Dec 2022; MEMO: Oil tankers formed a traffic jam off the coast of Turkiye on day one of the West's price cap on Russian crude, with Ankara insisting on new proof of insurance for all vessels, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

Around 19 crude oil tankers were waiting to cross Turkish waters on Monday, the report said, citing ship brokers, oil traders and satellite tracking services, Reuters reports.

Iran executes 4 over alleged cooperation with Israel intelligence

05 Dec 2022; MEMO: Iranian authorities yesterday executed four persons who were accused of working for the Israeli foreign intelligence service, the Mossad.

Local Iranian media reported that the Revolutionary Guards and the Ministry of Intelligence had arrested members of a cell that was "stealing and destroying private and public property," kidnapping and obtaining false confessions.

Ukraine and UAE to start talks on bilateral trade deal

05 Dec 2022; MEMO: The United Arab Emirates and Ukraine agreed on Monday to begin talks on a bilateral trade deal, expected to conclude by the middle of next year, the UAE's Economy Ministry said, Reuters reports.

The UAE has tried to remain neutral in the Ukraine conflict, despite Western pressure on Gulf oil producers to help isolate Russia, a fellow OPEC+ member.

Palestine: Israel demolishes mosque in occupied Hebron

06 Dec 2022; MEMO: Israeli occupation forces yesterday demolished a mosque in the Khallet Taha neighbourhood of the town of Dura, southwest of Hebron, the Wafa news agency reported.

Occupation forces armed with heavy machinery stormed the area and tore down a 100 square metre mosque. The Palestinian Ministry of Religious Endowment said Israeli occupation forces demolished Rasoolallah Mosque in Hebron.
