Russia: Lavrov arrives in Tehran to attend 3+3 format meeting on situation in South Caucasus

TEHRAN, October 23. /TASS/: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived in Tehran to participate in a ministerial meeting of the consultative 3+3 regional platform focusing on developments in the South Caucasus, a TASS correspondent reports.

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed the minister's participation in the consultations.

Iranian FM Warns Of “Heavy, Bitter” Consequences For Israel’s Miscalculation

TEHRAN, Oct 23 (NNN-ISNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, yesterday warned that, the region had turned into a “powder keg” and any miscalculation by Israel and its supporters could lead to “heavy and bitter” consequences for them.

He made the remarks at a joint press conference with visiting South African Foreign Minister, Naledi Pandor, following their meeting in the Iranian capital, Tehran, earlier in the day, during which they discussed bilateral ties and regional issues.

Iraqi PM, French President Call For Ceasefire In Gaza Strip

BAGHDAD, Oct 23 (NNN-NINA) – Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, and French President, Emmanuel Macron, yesterday called for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, to avoid repercussions for regional and world peace.

During a phone call, the two leaders discussed the rapid developments in the region, due to the ongoing conflict between Palestinians and Israelis, especially the bombing of the Gaza Strip that affects civilians, according to a statement issued by al-Sudani’s media office.

Israel arms civilian security squads, fearing internal strife

JERUSALEM, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Israel has set up hundreds of volunteer security squads in the two weeks since the Gaza war erupted and is arming them should there be knock-on Jewish-Arab unrest, authorities said on Sunday, despite what police said was "exemplary" conduct so far.

The last Gaza war in 2021 saw sometimes violent pro-Palestinian protests among the Arab citizens who make up 21% of Israel's population.

Turkey's Erdogan submits Sweden's NATO bid to parliament for ratification -presidency

ANKARA, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Monday submitted a bill approving Sweden's NATO membership bid to parliament for ratification, the presidency said, in a move welcomed by Stockholm that clears the way for it to join the Western defence alliance.

Erdogan pleased his NATO allies at a summit in July by promising to send the legislation to parliament when it reopened on Oct. 1, having previously raised objections over Sweden's alleged harbouring of terrorists.

Iraqi PM rejects attacks on bases housing U.S.-led coalition forces

BAGHDAD, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani on Monday rejected attacks targeting the country's military bases housing experts of the U.S.-led coalition forces, according to a statement by al-Sudani's media office.

The statement came a day after an armed group calling itself "The Islamic Resistance in Iraq" claimed responsibility for launching an attack on an airbase housing military experts of the U.S.-led coalition forces in Iraq's western province of Anbar.

China-donated rice distributed to needy families in north Afghanistan

SHIBERGHAN, Afghanistan, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- More than 100 families received China-donated rice in the Darzab district of north Afghanistan's Jawzjan province on Sunday, provincial director for national disaster authority Sarajudin Saraj said Monday.

Each needy family received a sack of 25 kg of rice donated by China, the official said.

Saraj added that a sack of 50 kg of flour and 2 kg of beans provided by other nations were also given to each needy family in the district.

Iranian, Egyptian FMs urge immediate end to attacks on Palestinians

TEHRAN, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry highlighted the necessity to immediately stop the attacks on Palestinians and send humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

In a phone conversation on Sunday night, the two foreign ministers also voiced their strong opposition to the forced displacement of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to a statement published on the Iranian Foreign Ministry's website on Monday.

Israel ramps up strikes on Gaza as US advises delaying ground offensive to allow talks on captives

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel ramped up its airstrikes Monday in Gaza, where the death toll is rising rapidly, and the United States advised Israel to delay an expected ground invasion to allow more time to negotiate the release of hostages taken by Hamas militants.
