White nationalism has been on the rise across the U.S., but it has particular resonance along the Idaho-Washington border, where the Aryans espoused hate and violence for years.

Vatican City, May 25 (AP/PTI) Pope Francis says abortion can never be condoned, even when the fetus is gravely sick or malformed. He is urging doctors and priests to support families to carry such pregnancies to term.

During an audience Saturday with participants of a Vatican-sponsored anti-abortion conference, Francis said opposition to abortion isn't a religious issue but a human one: "Is it licit to throw away a life to resolve a problem? Is it licit to hire a hitman to resolve a problem?"

German official warns Jews against wearing kippahs in public

26 May 2019; DW: Anti-Semitic attacks in Germany have surged in the past few years. Last year, an attack on two men wearing yarmulkes — also known as kippahs — on a street in Berlin caused widespread outrage in in the country.

The German government's anti-Semitism commissioner on Saturday warned the country's Jewish community to avoid donning yarmulkes, the traditional Jewish head coverings for males, in some public spaces due to a rise in anti-Semitic crimes.

Iran denies negotiations with U.S. over disputes

TEHRAN, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Ministry on Sunday denied that Iran had started talks with the United States over the mutual differences.

"There are no direct or indirect talks between Iran and the United States," Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said.

Mousavi made the remarks in response to the Kuwaiti media's Sunday reports that Tehran and Washington have started their negotiations over disputes.

Israeli president shocked by German skullcap warning

BERLIN (AP) — Israel’s president said Sunday he is shocked by a German official’s comment that he wouldn’t advise Jews to wear skullcaps in parts of the country, which is drawing mixed reactions at home.

Felix Klein, the government’s anti-Semitism commissioner, was quoted Saturday as saying: “I cannot recommend to Jews that they wear the skullcap at all times everywhere in Germany.” He didn’t elaborate on what places and times might be risky.

Bolton says N. Korea missile tests violated UN resolutions

TOKYO (AP) — U.S. national security adviser John Bolton on Saturday called a series of short-range missile tests by North Korea earlier this month a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions and said sanctions must be kept in place.

Washington’s position on the North’s denuclearization is consistent and a repeated pattern of failures to rid North Korea of nuclear weapons should be stopped, Bolton said, defending the recent U.S. seizure of a North Korean cargo ship. The U.S., however, is willing to resume talks with North Korea at any time, Bolton said.

US envoy calls for Beijing 'dialogue' with Dalai Lama

Beijing, May 25 (AFP/PTI) The US ambassador to China has called on Beijing to open a "substantive dialogue" with the Dalai Lama in remarks made this week during a rare visit to Tibet, his embassy said Saturday.

Terry Branstad visited northwest China's Qinghai province -- home to many Tibetans -- as well as the Tibet Autonomous Region, where access is restricted for diplomats and journalists.

Counterprotesters outnumber far-right at Dortmund rally

Venezuela probes deadly prison riot

CARACAS, May 25 (Xinhua) -- The Venezuelan government has launched an investigation into Friday's prison riot that has left 29 inmates killed, authorities said Saturday.

Gen. Edylberto Molina, deputy minister of the Integrated Police System (Visipol), headed a "technical team" that is in charge of the probe.

He has met with Rafael Calles, governor of northwest Portuguesa state where the prison riot happened, and other local authorities.

Russia must free detained Ukrainian ships, sailors, UN court rules

26 May 2019; DW: The 24 Ukrainian sailors in Russian custody need to be immediately released, a UN maritime court has ruled. Ukraine's president said Moscow could show its readiness to end the Crimea conflict by releasing the sailors.

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea on Saturday declared that the Ukrainian sailors detained by Russian authorities must be released with immediate effect.

Magnitude 8 earthquake strikes Amazon jungle in Peru

LIMA, Peru (AP) — A powerful magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck the Amazon jungle in north-central Peru early Sunday, the U.S. Geological survey reported, collapsing buildings and knocking out power to some areas.

The quake struck at 2:41 a.m. and was centered 47 miles (75 kilometers) south-southeast of the village of Lagunas and 57 miles (92 kilometers) east of the larger town of Yurimaguas. The epicenter was 68 miles (110 kilometers) below the surface.

In a tweet, President Martín Vizcarra called for calm and said that authorities were checking the affected areas.
