India: Jet Airways CEO Vinay Dube quits

Mumbai, May 14 (PTI) Grounded carrier Jet Airways Chief Executive Officer Vinay Dube has resigned from the post Tuesday, a day after its deputy chief executive and chief financial officer Amit Agarwal quit the company.

An Indian-American, Dube had joined Jet Airways in August 2017 after serving various roles at Delta Airlines, Sabre Inc and American Airlines in the US, Europe and Asia.

Bike rider badly hit by fast running car in Rania

Kanpur: A bike caught fire after collision  with a speeding car on the highway near Rania on Wednesday morning. Owing to hard hitting the bike rider was thrown at a distance. The accident brought the traffic to a standstill. 

According to the reports, the bike rider Ramji Katiyar r/o Barra forcefully came on the highway from the petrol pump. He was employed as Amin at the Civil Court. The moment after a speeding car badly hit the bike that got dragged with the car for a length of distance. Eventually the car stopped at the divider. 

Turkish stocks end Tuesday 2% up

After starting the day at 86,615.43 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index rose 1,740.4 points from 86,282.54 points at Monday's close.

One ounce of gold was sold for $1,298.60 at the daily close in Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, versus $1,283.90 at Monday's close.

Putin, Austrian president to discuss Iran

VIENNA, May 15. /TASS/: President of Austria Alexander Van der Bellen said before negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin that he will discuss with him relations between the two countries and the Iranian issue. Van der Bellen is staying in Sochi on a working visit on Wednesday.

"I am eagerly waiting for today’s negotiations with Vladimir Putin. The issues in focus will be good bilateral relations between Austria and Russia, relations between the EU and Russia and the current events concerning Iran," Van der Bellen wrote on Facebook.

India: Curfew relaxed in Assam's violence-hit Hailakandi

Hailakandi (Assam), May 14 (PTI) Curfew in violence- hit Hailakandi district was on Tuesday relaxed from 7 am till midnight following improvement in situation, an official order by the Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli said here.

Night curfew, however, will remain in force for eight to 10 days.

Banks, markets, educational institutions and government offices remained open and public and private vehicles were seen plying on the roads during the relaxation period, officials added.

RTI activist shot at in Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar (UP), May 15 (PTI) A right to information activist has been shot at by four unidentified men in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Wednesday.

Krishanpal had gone to the fields at Dhindhwali village on Tuesday evening when the four miscreants opened fire at him. The 35-year-old was rushed to a hospital in a serious condition, Superintendent of Police (City) Satpal Antil said.

Japanese gov't plans to reduce number of dementia patients

TOKYO, May 15 (Xinhua): The Japanese government is planning to reduce the number of people with dementia by setting quantifiable targets to lower the ratio of patients in their 70s, over a six-year period until 2025, sources close to the matter said Wednesday.

The government is hoping the initiative will help counter the rising social security costs involved with caring for sufferers and the scheme will involve the implementation of preventative measures and methods to delay the onset of dementia.

Modi makes emotional appeal to Kashi voters

Lucknow, May 14 (PTI) Striking an emotional chord with voters of the temple town, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday described himself as a 'Kashi-vaasi' and sought their blessings to pave the way for his election to Lok Sabha for a second term from the seat.

Terming Kashi his guiding spirit, the prime minister said his bond with the holy city was very strong as he had come here several times in the past five years, and added that it is believed that if a person comes here even once, he becomes an inseparable part of the city.

India: Man gets 10 years in jail for raping girl

Kishanganj, May 14 (PTI) A court in Bihar's Kishanganj district sentenced a man to 10 years in jail on Tuesday for raping a girl.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADJ) Krishna Pratap Sinha held Jung Bahadur Rajbhar guilty and convicted him under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on him, failing which he would have to spend an additional six months in jail.

India: Accused booked a month after gang-rape of Dalit woman in UP

Muzaffarnagar (UP), May 15 (PTI) More than a month after a 23-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, a case has been registered against the two accused, police said on Wednesday.

The action came on the directive of the senior superintendent of police following protests. According to the complaint, the woman was raped on April 8 at a village in Purkazi area by the accused, who also recorded a video of the incident to blackmail her, the police said.

North Korea demands return of cargo ship 'robbed' by US

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Tuesday called the U.S. seizure of a North Korean cargo ship involved in banned coal exports a “robbery” and demanded that the vessel be returned immediately.

The North’s official Korean Central News Agency, or KCNA, carried a statement by an unnamed foreign ministry spokesman who accused the United States of betraying the spirit of a summit agreement last June between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump.
