Ex-Goldman banker pleads not guilty on 1MDB charges in US court

7 May 2019; AFP: A former Goldman Sachs banker pleaded not guilty Monday in New York to bribery and other charges in the multi-billion-dollar 1MDB scandal after being extradited from Malaysia.

Malaysian Ng Chong Hwa, 51, a former managing director at the bank charged in both Malaysia and America over the 1MDB fraud, was extradited to the US on Friday, Malaysian attorney-general Tommy Thomas said.

Five dead, 233 detained after attempted coup in Venezuela

CARACAS, May 6 (Xinhua): At least five people were killed and around 233 people arrested after the April 30 coup attempt in Venezuela, Venezuela's prosecutor general Tarek William Saab said Monday.

In an interview with local television, Saab said that the coup was carried out through a call by opposition leaders Leopoldo Lopez and Juan Guaido, backed by renegade soldiers.

The Public Prosecutor's Office has so far issued 18 arrest warrants and some are against military officials, the prosecutor general said.

Thousands of Czechs demand justice minister's resignation

7 May 2019; DW: For the second week in a row, tens of thousands of people took part in protests in Prague and other cities across the Czech Republic on Monday to protest against Prime Minister Andrej Babis and his newly appointed justice minister.

Marie Benesova was appointed as the head of the Justice Ministry last Tuesday after her predecessor resigned. Benesova will now have significant control over prosecutions, including a criminal case involving Babis.

Australian PM egged on campaign trail

Sydney, May 7 (AFP) Australia's election became a little more raucous on Tuesday when a protestor tried -- but failed -- to crack an egg on Prime Minister Scott Morrison's head.

The attacker's egg, thrown from close range, appeared to bounce off the politician at a Country Women's Association event in New South Wales.

The woman was wrestled away by Morrison's close protection security detail and could later be seen leaving the venue holding an egg carton.

Turkey blasts US statement on drilling in Mediterranean

"Turkey has made its position explicitly clear regarding its continental shelf in the Eastern Mediterranean since 2004," said a Foreign Ministry statement on Monday.

Mumbai, May 6 (PTI) The BSE Sensex Monday cracked over 362.92 points in line with global sell-offs amid renewed fears that trade negotiations between the US and China are on the verge of collapse.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty dived 114 points to settle below the 11,600-level.

Trump awards Presidential Medal of Freedom to Tiger Woods

Turkey defiant in face of criticism over gas drilling off Cyprus

7 May 2019; DW: Turkey brushed off criticism from the European Union and the United States on Monday, defending its plans to drill for natural gas and oil off Cyprus.

"The legitimate rights of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus over the energy resources of the Eastern Mediterranean are not debatable," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in Ankara.

India: PM greets people on start of Ramzan

New Delhi May 6 PTI Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday greeted people on the start of the holy month of Ramzan.

"Greetings on the start of the holy month of Ramzan. May this auspicious month further the spirit of harmony, happiness and brotherhood in our society," he tweeted.

Ramzan, the month of fasting in Islam, will begin from Tuesday.

It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar when Muslims abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset. Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramzan.
