Australian parliamentary network hacked; no sign data stolen

SYDNEY (AP) — Australia’s leading cybersecurity agency is investigating a breach of the country’s federal parliamentary computing network amid speculation of hacking by a foreign nation.

Lawmakers and staff in the capital, Canberra, were made to change their passwords on the system after the overnight breach.

A joint statement from House of Representatives Speaker Tony Smith and Senate President Scott Ryan says there’s no evidence that data had been accessed in the breach, but investigations are continuing.

US approves sale of two missile defence systems for Air India One

Washington, Feb 7; PTI: The US has agreed to sell two state-of-the-art missile defence systems to Air India One for an estimated cost of USD 190 million, a move that will enhance the security of planes flying the prime minister and the president.

According to the Pentagon, the sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the US by helping to strengthen the US-Indian strategic relationship.

Mustafa asks Punjab govt to relieve him as DGP STF

Chandigarh, Feb 8 (PTI) IPS officer Mohmmad Mustafa Friday asked the Punjab government to relieve him as the chief of the anti-drug Special Task Force as he is "senior" to newly appointed police chief Dinkar Gupta.

Mustafa, a 1985-batch officer, said he has requested the Chief Minister's office to give me the charge of the state Human Rights Commission.

US condemns attempted space launch by Iran

Washington, Feb 8 (PTI) The US has called for tougher sanctions against the Iranian regime following the reported second failed space launch by Tehran in defiance to the international community and the Security Council resolutions.

Images released by the Colorado-based company DigitalGlobe have showed a rocket at the Imam Khomeini Space Center in Iran's Semnan province on Tuesday.

Industry experts have suggested the launch failed just after liftoff.

Sierra Leone declares national rape emergency

08 Feb 2019; DW: Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio declared rape and sexual violence a national emergency on Thursday, calling for an end to the culture of "indifference" and impunity surrounding it.

His announcement follows a national outcry over the prevalence of sexual violence in the West African nation, where recorded cases of sexual and gender-based violence doubled last year, reaching 8,505 in a population of 7.5 million, according to police statistics.

Congress to intiate action against 4 rebel MLAs in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Feb 8 (PTI) Cracking the whip, the Congress Legislature Party Friday decided to initiate action against four party rebel MLAs under the Anti-Defection Law, CLP leader Siddaramaiah said.

Briefing reporters after the CLP meet, Siddaramaiah said he would meet the Assembly Speaker Ramesh Kumar and urge him to take action against Ramesh Jarkiholi, Umesh Jadhav, Mahesh Kumathali and B Nagendra.

He said barring the four and J N Ganesh, all other lawmakers attended the CLP meet.

UN Security Council extends mandate of Experts' Panel on Sudan

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council Thursday adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the Panel of Experts assisting the Sudan Sanctions Committee until March 12, 2020.

According to the resolution 2455, the council recalled the final report of the Sudan Panel of Experts and found that challenges remain in the implementation of the sanctions regime.

The 15-member body determined that "the situation in Sudan continues to constitute a threat to international peace and security in the region."

US slams Germany for deporting wanted terrorist to Turkey

08 Feb 2019; DW: The United States sharply criticized Germany on Thursday for deporting a convicted terrorist to Turkey despite an extradition request for him to stand trial in a New York court.

Adem Yilmaz was deported on Tuesday to his native Turkey after serving an 11-year prison sentence in Germany for planning a 2007 bomb plot to attack American citizens and facilities in Germany as part of an Islamist extremist cell.

India: Boy held after pregnant classmate accuses him of rape

Baripada (Odisha), Feb 8 (PTI) A teenage boy of a state-run residential school in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district was apprehended and sent to a juvenile home after one of her classmates, who is in her advanced stage of pregnancy, accused him of raping her, officials said Friday.

The headmistress of the school in the district lodged a complaint with the police on Wednesday after noticing that the tribal girl, a student of Class 6, is pregnant, a police officer said.
