India: Minor girl raped in UP, youth arrested

Muzaffarnagar, Jan 28 (PTI) A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped here by a youth, who has been arrested, police said Monday.

The girl was taken by the youth when she was playing near her house and raped at a secluded area on Sunday, they said.

Hearing the girl crying, villagers rushed to the spot and caught the accused person. They thrashed him and later handed him over to police, Circle Officer Yogender Kumar.

The girl was sent for medical examination, he said.

At least 12 killed in armed clash in Mexico

MEXICO CITY, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- At least twelve people were killed and two others injured in a clash between two groups of armed civilians in southern Mexican state of Guerrero, said government officials on Sunday.

The gun fight occurred at around 3:00 p.m. (2100 GMT) on Sunday on the road leading to the community of Paraiso de Tepila in the municipality of Chilapa in Guerrero state, said Roberto Alvarez, spokesperson of the state security authorities.

India: Police Recruitment Test: One solver held from Chakeri area

KANPUR: One solver from one examination centre of the Uttar Pradesh Police Constable Recruitment Test in Chakeri area has been caught on Sunday. The invigilator’s doubt on a difference in the examinee’s photo identity brought the matter to the fore. He dialled the police and further questioning established the falsification. The police succeeded in recovering the fake documents and I-card.  

India: Man held for raping tribal girl in Odisha

Phulbani (Odisha), Jan 27 (PTI) A man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly raping a 13-year-old tribal girl in Belghar area of Odisha's Kandhamal district, police said.

The 20-year-old man was held for kidnapping and raping the minor girl, a student of Class 7, Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Belghar Police station, Dasarath Hembram, said.

The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint lodged by the father of the girl on Saturday, he said, adding, medical examination of the accused and the minor have been conducted.

Russia slams attempts to push Venezuelans into abyss of deadly strife

Russian envoy explains why Security Council failed to agree joint statement of Venezuela

The UN Security Council (UNSC) failed to agree upon a joint statement on Venezuela because of the contentious position of the United States, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia said at the UNSC meeting on the situation in Venezuela.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Russia for blocking the joint statement of UNSC.

Significant progress in U.S.- Taliban talks: U.S. envoy

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- The United States and Afghan Taliban made significant progress on vital issues after six days' consultations in Qatar, U.S. Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad said Saturday.

The meetings were "more productive than they have been in the past. We made significant progress on vital issues," Khalilzad said on his Twitter account.

However, he also pointed out "a number of issues left to work out," saying that an agreement "must include an intra-Afghan dialogue and comprehensive ceasefire."

French president heads to Egypt on mission to reinforce ties

CAIRO (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron is headed to Egypt with a large delegation on a three-day trip to reinforce ties with the Arab world’s most populous country.

He arrives Sunday in the country’s south to visit the temple of Abu Simbel and other archaeological sites, before meeting his counterpart Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and signing accords between the two states on Monday.

U.S.-led shelling kills 42 civilians, IS in eastern Syria

DAMASCUS, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- The forces of the U.S.-led coalition bombarded the Islamic State (IS)-held farms in Syria's eastern Euphrates region, killing 42 people, including 13 civilians, a war monitor reported on Saturday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the overnight shelling from the U.S.-run base in al-Omal oil field targeted farms controlled by the IS group in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zour province.

The death toll could likely rise due to the number of critically wounded people.
