UN partly lifts sanctions on North Korea

23 Jan 2019; AA: In a major relief to North Korea, the UN Security Council has allowed humanitarian agencies to work in the country, media reports said Wednesday.

The Security Council has granted exemptions from sanctions to UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), Eugene Bell Foundation, Christian Friends of Korea, and the Canadian NGO First Steps Health Society to work in the country facing sanctions for its nuclear program since 2006.

Russia’s Aerospace Force registers Israeli missile launch over Mediterranean

MOSCOW, January 22. /TASS/. Russia’s Aerospace Force has registered the launch of an Israeli target missile over the Mediterranean Sea, the Defense Ministry of Russia said on Tuesday.

"Today, at 07:35 Moscow time, the Aerospace Force’s radio-electronic equipment detected the launch of a target missile over the Mediterranean Sea," the ministry said.

"Specialists of Russia’s National Defense Control Center identified the target as a target missile for tests of the Israeli Air Force’s missile defense system," the ministry said.

Pensioner held in Germany for stealing rail tracks for scrap

22 Jan 2019; DW: Some 80 police officers stormed the apartment of a 73-year-old German in the eastern city of Görlitz on Tuesday, after he stole 600 meters of train tracks and sold them for scrap. The pensioner made some 16,000 euros ($18,160) selling the disused track to scrap yards.

Police in Görlitz said that the unusually high number of officers taking part in the operation was due to the man's criminal record, which included a violation of Germany's weapons laws.

Never mind climate change, Davos prefers private jets

22 Jan 2019; AFP: The Davos elite say they are more worried than ever about climate change. But that isn't stopping them chartering private jets in record numbers.

The convenience and comfort of flying privately rather than commercially appears to outweigh any concerns about the outsized carbon footprint it involves, judging by a number-crunching exercise by the company Air Charter Service (ACS).

It forecast nearly 1,500 private jet flights over the week of the World Economic Forum (WEF) to airports near Davos in the Swiss Alps.

Israeli army artillery strikes on northern Gaza suburbs, no injuries reported

GAZA, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli army artillery struck on Tuesday a military lookout post that belongs to military groups in the Gaza Strip and no injuries reported, security officials in Gaza said.

The Israeli artillery shelling on the post close to the border between northern Gaza Strip and Israel was destroyed and no injuries were reported, said the officials.

All Tupolev-22M3 grounded till end of probe into Tuesday’s crash

Iran says U.S. detention of Press TV anchor "illegal"

TEHRAN, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that the recent detention of an anchor of Iran's Press TV by the U.S. FBI is "illegal."

The announcement was made as the ministry delivered Iran's protest note over the detention of Marzieh Hashemi, a Press TV journalist and news presenter, to the summoned Swiss ambassador to Iran.

Hashemi, who has been living in Iran for years, was detained by the FBI at the international airport in St. Louis, Missouri, on Jan. 13 while making a family visit.

US: Syrian refugee offers free meal to federal workers

22 Jan 2019; AA: A Syrian refugee living in the U.S. provides federal government employees with free meal everyday at his restaurant, as Washington is going through a partial government shutdown.

Yassin Terou, the owner of the Yassin’s Falafel House in Tennessee, launched the campaign on Jan. 14, which offers free meals to federal workers when they show their employee ID cards.

Indian EC writes to Delhi Police seeking FIR against self-proclaimed cyber expert

The Election Commission on Tuesday asked the Delhi Police to lodge an FIR against a self-proclaimed cyber expert for his claims that the 2014 Lok Sabha polls were rigged and the EVMs can be hacked.

In its letter, the EC said Syed Shuja has allegedly violated section 505 (1) of the IPC pertaining to spreading rumours which creates panic.

Brexiter James Dyson to move HQ to Singapore

22 Jan 2019; DW: UK billionaire and Brexit campaigner James Dyson announced on Tuesday that he is moving the headquarters of his company, famous for its cordless vacuum cleaners, to Singapore. Dyson insisted that the move had nothing to do with the UK's exit from the European Union.

"An increasing majority of Dyson's customers and all of our manufacturing operations are now in Asia; this shift has been occurring for some time and will quicken as Dyson brings its electrical vehicle to market," the company said in a statement.

Delhi Court reserves order to summon accused in defamation case by Akbar

New Delhi, Jan 22 (PTI) A Delhi court Tuesday reserved for January 29 its order on whether to summon journalist Priya Ramani as an accused in a defamation case filed by former Union minister M J Akbar after she levelled allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal reserved the order after listening to arguments from Akbar's lawyer, who said a prima facie case was made out against Ramani.
