India: 10-year-old raped by neighbour in UP

Bhadohi (UP), Jan 18 (PTI) A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a neighbour in the residential quarters of a primary health centre in Nai Bazar locality here, police said on Friday.

The minor, whose mother is a nurse, was raped by the husband of another nurse living in the same residential quarters when she was alone at home on Wednesday, Satya Narain Misra, Kotwali police station in-charge, said.

He said the girl narrated her ordeal to her mother on Thursday after persistent questioning, following which an FIR was lodged against the accused, Yogesh Yadav.

School bus overturns in Kanpur Dehat; 6 hurt

KANPUR: A minibus carrying school children overturned owing to the driver’s recklessness at Musa Nagar in Kanpur Dehat on Friday. As many as six students were seriously injured. The driver’s license was not even checked after the incident leave aside the vehicle’s fitness. Were authorities concerned maintaining a careless attitude like the minibus driver? India: 2 men get 20 years in jail for raping minor girl

Balasore (Odisha), Jan 18 (PTI) A court here has sentenced two men to 20 years of imprisonment for raping a minor girl in 2016.

Awarding the jail term to Dhulia Manual and Bikas Majhi on Thursday, Additional District Judge Ajanta Sarangi also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 each on the convicts for raping the 14-year-old girl at Chakarada village.

In case of non-payment of the fine amount, the convicts would have to serve an additional three months in jail, the judge said.

India: Two tanneries running on unauthoritised power supply sealed

KANPUR:  A total of 24 drums of the two tanneries were lately sealed on infringement of rules. Despite the power supply cut, these tanneries were found operational on illegal electricity connection in a sudden raid conducted by the team sent by the ADM (city) Vivek Srivastava. The KESCO has, in the meantime, filed an FIR at the Chakeri police station. The ACMs were continuously keeping vigil on the operation of the tanneries. The owners will not be allowed to run their units against norms, he cleared.

India: Woman gang-raped in Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar, Jan 19 (PTI) A 22-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by two men in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Friday when the woman was alone at her residence in Kheri Firozabad village here under Kakroli police station, they said.

According to a complaint lodged by the woman's father, the accused, Gaurav and Ravi, who hail from the same village, barged into her house and raped her while her parents were away, the police said.

Death toll from Colombian car bomb blast climbs to 21

BOGOTA, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a car bomb blast outside a police academy here on Thursday morning has climbed to 21, Colombian police said late Thursday.

The blast at the General Santander Police Academy in southern Bogota left 68 people wounded, 58 of whom had been discharged from the hospital, reported Agence France-Presse, citing a statement from the Colombian police.

Israeli military demolishes Palestinian home in West Bank

JERUSALEM, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Israel demolished the home of a 17-year-old Palestinian who stabbed to death an Israeli civilian last September, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Friday.

The apartment of the Palestinian killer, identified as Khalil Jabarin, was located in the village of Yatta in the southern West Bank, according to an IDF statement.

During the demolition, dozens of Palestinians hurled rocks at IDF soldiers who responded with riot dispersal means.

'Thousands' more children separated from parents at US border

17 Jan 2019; AFP: Thousands more children were forcibly separated from their parents after illegally crossing the US-Mexico border from 2017-2018 than originally admitted by President Donald Trump's administration, an official report said Thursday.

The inspector general of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which was given responsibility for the children, said the total number separated under the administration's "zero-tolerance policy" toward illegal immigrants remains unknown.

PUTRAYAJAYA, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia’s Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said Friday that an apology by Goldman Sachs for its role in the alleged multibillion-dollar ransacking of state investment fund 1MDB was insufficient and that it must pay $7.5 billion as compensation.

Goldman CEO David Solomon apologized Wednesday to the Malaysian people for former banker Tim Leissner’s role in arranging bond sales for 1MDB. They provided a means for associates of former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak to allegedly steal billions over several years from the fund.

Australia arrests suspect for murder of Israeli girl

18 Jan 2019; DW: Australian police have arrested a 20-year-old man over the murder and rape of an Israeli exchange student in Melbourne, officials said. The student was attacked while walking home after a comedy show.

A suspect has been arrested over the death of an Israeli woman, Australian police said on Friday, as mourners prepared to hold a vigil for the murdered Aiia Maasarwe in Melbourne.

Police said the suspect was male and 20 years old, but did not release any details.
