India: Opposition rally will sound the death knell for BJP: Mamata

Kolkata, Jan 17 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday said the mega opposition rally being hosted by her Trinamool Congress here on January 19 would sound the "death knell" for the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls and regional parties would be the deciding factor.

She also claimed that the BJP's seat count in the general election will not cross more than 125.

The number of seats that the state parties will win will be much more than the BJP's, further claimed.

Pakistan SC asks govt to lift travel ban on opposition leaders

Islamabad, Jan 17 (PTI) Pakistan's Supreme Court Thursday ordered the government led by Prime Minister Imran Khan to lift the travel ban imposed on opposition leader Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and the Sindh Chief Minister, and asked the country's anti-corruption body to probe their involvement in Rs 35 billion 'fake accounts case'.

As many as 172 suspects were placed on the Exit Control List (ECL) on the recommendations of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed by the apex court. A person cannot fly abroad if his name is placed on the ECL.

India: Saudi man held at Delhi airport with live bullet

New Delhi, Jan 17 (PTI) A Saudi Arabian national has been apprehended at the Delhi airport for allegedly carrying a live bullet in his bag, an official said Thursday.

A S Wunaymir T was going through the security checks at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Wednesday evening when a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawan detected a "bullet-like object" in his luggage, the official said.

"A live bullet round was recovered from Wunaymir's bag. He was handed over to the police as he could not produce valid documents for carrying the ammunition," he said.

India: Campaign against child labour to be launched in Jaipur

Jaipur, Jan 17 (PTI) With an aim to end child labour in the city, a special campaign 'Child Labour Free Jaipur' (CLFJ) will be launched on Friday.

"The campaign has been prepared by taking support from multiple stakeholders and this novel initiative will help in putting an end to child labour in Jaipur," said Karan Malik, programme manager of The British Asian Trust, part of the CLFJ campaign.

Madagascar: Rajaonarimampianina hands over power to Rajoelina

ANTANANARIVO, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The handover of power between Madagascar's incumbent President Hery Rajaonarimampianina and incoming President Andry Rajoelina was held Friday in the capital, Antananarivo, in the presence of acting president Rivo Rakotovao.

Before the power transfer, the three held a closed-door meeting for 47 minutes, and then the acting president left the room and let the other two to continue their meeting for 28 minutes.

The two signed the official documents and shook hands.

India: BJP leader shot dead in Madhya Pradesh

Mandsaur (MP), Jan 17 (PTI) A local BJP leader was shot dead by an unidentified person in a busy area of the city Thursday evening, police said.

The victim, Prahlad Bandhwar, was president of the local municipal council.

City Superintendent of Police (CSP) R M Shukla said Bandhwar was attacked when he was standing outside District Cooperative Bank, located in Nai Abadi area, at around 7 pm.

An unidentified person shot him from point-blank range and fled from the spot, Shukla said and added the assailant's motorcycle has been recovered.

India: BJP gen secy Ram Lal in hospital due to fever

Noida (UP), Jan 17 (PTI) BJP national general secretary (organisation) Ram Lal was admitted to a hospital in Noida where he was undergoing treatment for fever on Thursday.

He was running fever on Wednesday night and is still under observation, officials at Kailash Hospital here said.

"Some blood tests have been done and reports are awaited. He is fine but under observation," senior manager, Kailash Hospital, V B Joshi, told PTI.

2 pilots of crashed Russian fighter jets rescued

MOSCOW, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Two pilots have been found and rescued at sea following a collision between two Su-34 fighter jets over the Sea of Japan, the Russian Defense Ministry said Friday.

The pilots were brought up on board rescue choppers and their conditions are satisfactory, the ministry said in a statement.

India: Youth held for attempting to rape minor girl in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Jan 18 (PTI) A 20-year-old youth has been arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a 16-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Friday.

According to a complaint lodged by the girl's father, the accused, Shivam, picked up the minor from near a sugar cane field on Thursday and tried to rape her in Bachan Singh Colony under New Mandi police station, they said.

He fled after the girl cried for help, the police said.

India: No war, but still soldiers are dying on border: Bhagwat

Nagpur (Mah), Jan 17 (PTI) RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat lamented Thursday that though there was no war going on, soldiers were still dying on the country's borders.

This was happening because "we are not doing our job properly", he said at a function to mark silver jubilee of the Prahaar Samaaj Jagruti Sanstha here.

He said it was time to sacrifice life for the country before India gained freedom. After Independence, one had to do it on the borders when there was a war, the RSS chief said.
