India: 28-year-old man arrested for attempting to rape woman

Muzaffarnagar, Jan 2 (PTI) A 28-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a woman after promising her a job, police said Wednesday.

The accused was identified as Sameer Thakur, SHO Harsharan Sharma said.

According to a complaint lodged by the 26-year-old woman, the accused brought her to Meerut after promising her a job and then tried to rape her.

The accused started recording a video after the woman resisted his attempt to rape her, she said in her complaint to police.

PoK refugees' dharna in Jammu enters sixth day

Jammu, Jan 1 (PTI) A protest by refugees from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) here against the state and central governments for not fulfilling their various demands entered its sixth day on Tuesday.

Led by SOS International, an organisation advocating the cause of PoK displaced persons (DP), the protesters began the indefinite chain dharna on December 27.

They are demanding implementation of a package approved by the Jammu and Kashmir cabinet in October 2014 for PoK DPs, among others.

India: Three die in road accidents

KANPUR: Three people have died in separate tragic accidents on Monday.

A child named Vivek was crushed to death on the spot. Babu Ram r/o Vidhnu Shahpur Majhawan was driving the bike while his wife and child were sitting on the back seat. Just as they reached near community health centre, a tractor approaching from the opposite direction hit the motorbike. The child came under the wheels and died.

Man hits pedestrians with car, injuring 9 in Tokyo self-claimed terror attack

TOKYO, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- In the early hours of the new year, a man crashed his car into pedestrians in Shibuya Ward in Tokyo, injuring nine people in what he claimed to be a terrorist attack, local media reported Tuesday.

The attacker, 21-year-old Kazuhiro Kusakabe, was arrested by the police on suspicion of attempted murder.

The incident occurred on Takeshita Street in the Harajuku district, a famous and crowded shopping street on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, where vehicles were banned from entering on Monday night.

China offers 144-hr visa-free transit in 5 more cities

JINAN, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- China began to implement its 144-hour visa-free transit policy in five more cities on Tuesday for travelers from 53 countries.

These cities are Qingdao, a major port city in Shandong Province; Xiamen, a coastal city in Fujian Province; Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province; Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province; and Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province.

Russian meteorologist says 2019 may turn out as warmest year on record

MOSCOW, January 1. /TASS/. As 2019 approaches, it may turn out to be the warmest one on record because of the so-called El-Nino phenomenon, Head of Russia’s Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring Roman Vilfand told TASS.

"The El-Nino phenomenon occurs when ocean temperatures rise in the central and eastern Equatorial Pacific," he said. "The warming has been affecting larger areas, including other oceans. There has been a huge heat transfer from the ocean to the atmosphere, it gradually engulfs the entire Earth," Russia’s top meteorologist added.

Washington State gun control group pushes for ban on high-capacity magazine

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- A gun control group in the U.S. western state of Washington is urging state lawmakers to give high priority to a proposed ban on high-capacity magazines in the state, a local radio station reported Monday.

Washington's KUOW Public Radio said the gun control advocacy group, the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility (WAGR), has listed restrictions on high-capacity magazines at the top of their 2019 policy agenda.

Comedian Zelensky announces plans to run for Ukrainian president

KIEV, January 1. /TASS/. Ukrainian comedy actor Vladimir Zelensky, ranked second by opinion polls concerning potential presidential candidates, plans to run for president in the election scheduled for March 31, 2019, as he himself said during the Evening Quarter show on the 1+1 TV channel.

"I am going to run for president. Everybody has been asking me whether it is ‘yes’ or ‘no.’ I say ‘yes’," he said.
