French police brace for New Year’s Eve unrest

PARIS (AP) — France is deploying more than 147,000 security forces nationwide to gird for New Year’s Eve unrest as yellow vest protesters prepare to join the public revelry.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement issued Sunday that the heavy security measures are needed because of a “high terrorist threat” and concerns about “non-declared protests.”

Mercury drops to 3 degrees Celsius in Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 30 (PTI) Cold conditions prevailed in the national capital on Sunday with the minimum temperature settling at 3 degrees Celsius, four notches below the season's average, the MeT department said.

The maximum temperature settled at 22.9 degree Celsius, two notches above the season's average, an official of the Meteorological (MeT) department said.

The humidity oscillated between 34 and 100 per cent.

Delhi has been reeling under a cold wave for the past few days.

Escaped lion kills worker at U.S. wildlife conservatory

WASHINGTON, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- A 22-year-old worker at a wildlife conservatory in U.S. state of North Carolina was killed Sunday by a lion that escaped a locked space.

The Conservators Center in Burlington said in a statement that the worker was killed during a routine enclosure cleaning.

"One of the lions somehow left a locked space and entered the space the humans were in and quickly killed one person," the statement said.

Indian police intensify combing operations for Maoists

Kannur, Dec 30 (PTI) Police intensified combing operations on Sunday following reports that four suspected Maoists appeared at Ambayathod in Kannur district, raised slogans and pasted posters, police said.

Talking to reporters, Kannur Superintendent of Police, Siva Vikram, said three of the Maoists were armed and have been identified.

"A thorough search operation was conducted in Kannur, Wyanad and Kozhikode districts. A case has also been registered. We are planning a larger operation jointly," he said.

Amazon plans to expand Whole Foods stores across U.S.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- U.S. e-commerce giant Amazon is planning to build and expand Whole Foods stores across the country to put more customers within range of its two-hour delivery service, local media reported on Sunday.

The move would bring Whole Foods to more suburbs and other areas where the grocery chain is quickly adding customers since it was acquired by Amazon in 2017, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the plans.

Man stabs wife over suspicion of illicit affair

New Delhi, Dec 30 (PTI) A 32-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times allegedly by her husband after he suspected her of having an illicit affair in northeast Delhi's Sonia Vihar, police said Sunday.

The incident took place Saturday morning, they said.

The woman suffered multiple injuries to the chest and in the abdomen, police said.

Road accident frightens people

KANPUR: A very heart-rending accident took place at Coca-Cola crossing here on Monday morning. The uncontrolled truck jumped at the speed breaker and directly pierced into the divider on the road. The people tried to pull the blood-soaked driver and the two cleaners who were entangled into the pipe laden on the truck. Police anyhow pulled them out and sent them to the hospital for the treatment. Unfortunately, the driver died after the accident.

Indian PM renames 3 islands of Andaman Nicobar

Port Blair, Dec 30 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday announced renaming of three islands of Andaman and Nicobar on the occasion of 75th anniversary of Tricolour hoisting by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose here.

The Ross Island was renamed as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, the Neil Island would now be known as Shaheed Dweep and the Havelock Island as Swaraj Dweep, Modi said during a speech.

The PM also released a commemorative stamp, its first-day cover and a Rs-75 coin on this special day.

NY man charged in kidnapping of 2 Jewish children

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York man has been charged in the kidnapping of two children whose mother recently fled an ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect in Guatemala.

The FBI arrested Aron Rosner of Brooklyn this week on charges accusing him of providing financial assistance to members of the religious group Lev Tahor in an international abduction scheme.

Rosner’s defense attorney did not respond to an email seeking comment Thursday.

Russia-US relations key factor of strategic stability: Putin
