Former President George H.W. Bush dies at age 94

HOUSTON (AP) — George H.W. Bush, a World War II hero whose presidency soared with the coalition victory over Iraq in Kuwait, but then plummeted in the throes of a weak economy that led voters to turn him out of office after a single term, has died. He was 94.

Bush, who also presided during the collapse of the Soviet Union and the final months of the Cold War, died late Friday night at his Houston home, said family spokesman Jim McGrath. His wife of more than 70 years, Barbara Bush, died in April 2018.

May faces more Brexit woes after UK minister quits

LONDON (AP) — The latest minister to quit British Prime Minister Theresa May’s government because of Brexit said Saturday that the prime minister’s compromise agreement would leave Britain outnumbered and outmaneuvered in future negotiations with the European Union.

Ex-Universities and Science Minister Sam Gyimah likened the agreement to playing soccer against opponents who “are the referee and they make the rules as well.”

India: Manipur journalist arrested under NSA

Imphal, Dec 1 (PTI) An Imphal-based journalist has been arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) for allegedly uploading videos criticising the BJP-led governments in Manipur and the Centre for observing Rani Jhansi's birth anniversary.

Kishorechand Wangkhem is a journalist of a local TV channel and the videos which he had uploaded on November 19 in both English and Meitei were not related to his official work, officials said.

Jaipur, Dec 1 (PTI) Congress president Rahul Gandhi Saturday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi what kind of Hindu he is as he "does not understand" the foundation of Hinduism, prompting a strong retort from senior BJP leaders.

"What is the essence of Hinduism? What does the Gita say? That knowledge is with everybody... Knowledge is all around you. Every living being has knowledge," he said at an interactive session in Udaipur in Rajasthan.

india: Online registration for drone operation starts

Mumbai, Dec 1 (PTI) Civil Aviation Ministry announced Saturday it has started the registration process for drone operators in the country, to be done through a portal called 'Digital Sky'.

The government, in August, had put in place regulations for operations of remotely piloted aircraft, to come into effect from December 1.

Under these norms, drone users will be required to do one-time registration of their drones. They will also need to register the pilots of drones as well as their owners.

63 schools decline immunization

KANPUR:  As many as 63 schools have declined to hold the health department’s vaccination programme against measles and rubella in the wake of recent news of deterioration of the students’ condition behind administering the injection. They were even sent to hospitals for proper treatment. The parents looked disturbed with teary eyes at their respective wards' worsening condition.

KANPUR: Alert gangman averted train mishap on the track of Kanpur-Lucknow route. His cautious eyes proved helpful in foiling any plot.  

While patrolling along the railways track on Thursday’s late night near Ganga Ghat railway station, he found five to six iron pieces placed on the railway track.

India: Dalit girl gang-raped in UP

Gonda (UP), Dec 1 (PTI) A case has been registered against five people for allegedly raping a minor Dalit girl in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district, police said Saturday.

On November 3, a youth managed to dupe the girl and took her away to an unknown place, where the girl was locked up in a room and the accused, along with his friends, raped her, said Superintendent of Police R P Singh.

After a few days, when the girl was able to reach her home, she narrated the entire sequence of events to her father, the SP said.

China orders halt to baby gene-editing activities

29 Nov 2018; AFP: China's science ministry has ordered that people involved in the controversial baby gene-editing experiment halt their activities, a government official told state media Thursday.

The ministry "firmly opposes the baby gene-editing incident and has already demanded that the relevant organisation suspend the scientific activities of relevant personnel," a ministry official said, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

CNN fires analyst Marc Lamont Hill after UN speech on Israel

NEW YORK (AP) — CNN on Thursday parted ways with contributor Marc Lamont Hill after a speech the college professor made on Israel and Palestine at the United Nations.

A CNN spokesperson confirmed Hill is no longer under contract. The network did not give a reason, but the move comes amid objections to Hill’s speech by the Anti-Defamation League and other groups.
