NASA picks ancient Martian river delta for 2020 rover touchdown

20 Nov 2018; AFP: NASA has picked an ancient river delta as the landing site for its uncrewed Mars 2020 rover, to hunt for evidence of past life on Earth's neighboring planet, officials said Monday.

Even though the Red Planet is now cold and dry, the landing site, Jezero Crater, was filled with a 1,600-foot (500-meter) deep lake that opened to a network of rivers some 3.5 to 3.9 billion years ago.

Iraq’s president meets Saudi king after visiting rival Iran

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Saudi Arabia’s King Salman received Iraq’s president in Riyadh on Sunday, a day after the Iraqi official visited the kingdom’s rival, Iran.

Barham Salih’s back-to-back visits to Iran and Saudi Arabia reflect the delicate balance Iraq seeks to maintain in a region where its two powerful neighbors are battling for supremacy.

Salih was received at the airport in Riyadh by the province’s governor and other Saudi officials. King Salman held a lunch in honor of the Iraqi president with ministers and high-level princes in attendance.

German strike: 14 Eurowings flights canceled at Duesseldorf

BERLIN (AP) — Budget airline Eurowings says 14 flights were canceled at Duesseldorf airport in western Germany after flight attendants started a temporary strike over working conditions.

German news agency dpa reported that flights were canceled Tuesday for eight hours until 12:30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT). Flight attendants are demanding, among other things, more reliable work schedules.

The ver.di union says the strike is a reaction to Eurowings’ refusal to further negotiate working conditions.

Three charged over alleged Melbourne terror plot

20 Nov 2018; AFP: Three men who allegedly plotted "chilling" terror attacks in Melbourne were charged early Tuesday, less than two weeks after a stabbing rampage inspired by the Islamic State group left two dead in Australia's second city, police said.

The trio, all Australian nationals of Turkish descent, were detained by counter-terror police in overnight raids as they escalated preparations to attack crowded areas of Melbourne, according to police.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress will have a record 43 Latino members next year.

The number increased over the weekend after California Democrat Gil Cisneros defeated Republican Young Kim, who was trying to become the first Korean-American woman elected to the House.

The Hispanic delegation will be made up of 35 Democrats and eight Republicans in both chambers.

Roscosmos never accused NASA astronauts of drilling hole in Soyuz ship

MOSCOW, November 19. /TASS/. Russia’s state space corporation Roscosmos has never accused NASA astronauts of drilling a hole in the hull of the Soyuz MS-09 manned spaceship docked to the International Space Station (ISS), Roscosmos chief Dmitry Rogozin said on Monday.

"We have never accused the Americans of that. It was an unscrupulous interpretation of certain statements and media reports. I categorically deny these allegations as totally untrue," he said.

Yemeni rebels say they will halt rocket fire at Saudi Arabia

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Yemen’s Shiite rebels said Monday that they will halt rocket fire into Saudi Arabia for the sake of peace efforts, answering a key Saudi demand in the latest push to stop the civil war in the Arab world’s poorest country.

But the rebels also said they had fired a ballistic missile into Saudi Arabia overnight in response to an attempted border incursion and a Saudi airstrike, and that they reserved the right to respond to attacks.

US closes busiest Mexico border crossing for several hours

TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — The United States closed off northbound traffic for several hours at the busiest border crossing with Mexico to install new security barriers on Monday, a day after hundreds of Tijuana residents protested against the presence of thousands of Central American migrants.

The U.S. also closed one of two pedestrian crossings at the San Ysidro crossing in a move apparently aimed at preventing any mass rush of migrants across the border.

Japan's trade surplus with US shrinks further in October

19 Nov 2018; AFP: Japan's politically sensitive trade surplus with the United States shrank further in October, the fourth consecutive monthly decline, official data showed Monday.

The figure also showed an overall global trade deficit, as increases in imports of crude oil and liquefied natural gas overwhelmed a rise in exports of cars and engines.

The surplus with the US came in at 573.4 billion yen ($5 billion) in October, a year-on-year decline of 11.0 percent.
