Israel avoids early elections as coalition is kept intact

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel avoided early elections after a key coalition partner in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government said on Monday that he would not withdraw his party, keeping the coalition intact despite a crisis triggered by a violent flare-up with Gaza militants.

Education Minister Naftali Bennett said his hard-line, pro-settler Jewish Home party would give Netanyahu another chance to address the security challenges facing Israel, listing off threats from Gaza and Lebanon, among others, which he wanted dealt with more firmly.

White House again threatens Acosta’s pass; CNN seeks hearing

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration has again targeted White House press credentials for CNN reporter Jim Acosta.

After a federal judge ordered that Acosta’s credentials be temporarily restored last week, the White House sent Acosta a letter saying it had made the “preliminary decision” to suspend his pass. The White House said Acosta would continue to hold his credentials while the 14-day judge’s order was in effect.

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Poor countries around the world are facing a dangerous shortage of toilets that puts millions of live at risk, according to campaigners marking World Toilet Day by urging governments and businesses to invest more in sanitation.

The toilet crisis is most severe in parts of Africa and Asia facing extreme poverty and seeing a population boom.

Indian fire 'effectively responded': Pak Army

Islamabad, Nov 19 (PTI) Pakistan Army said on Monday that despite restricted liberty of action due to presence of "our Kashmiri brethren" on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC), Indian fire is always "effectively responded".

Army spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor made the comments while talking to a group of journalists from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Hazara Division of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

India: Two female Naxal terrorists killed in encounter with police

Gadchiroli (Maha), Nov 19 (PTI) Two women Naxals were gunned down in an encounter with police commandos in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district on Monday morning, a police
official said.

The gun battle broke out between the ultras and C-60 commandos, a specialised combat unit of the Gadchiroli police, in Nihalkay forest area under Dhanora taluka around 8.30 am, Gadchiroli's Additional Superintendent of Police Mahendra Pandit told PTI.

The commandos were on an anti-Naxal operation in the area since Sunday night, he said.

China expands ban on waste imports

19 Nov 2018; AFP: China will expand its ban on imports of solid waste, local media reported Monday, almost a year after its first curbs caused havoc in countries that sent their rubbish to the Asian giant.

The regulatory action -- which expands the prohibition to 32 categories of solid waste from the 24 banned last year -- will go into effect from December 31, according to official news agency Xinhua, citing four Chinese government agencies.

Outsiders, academy members to pick Nobel Literature winners

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Only half of those who choose the winners of next year’s Nobel Prize in literature will be members of the scandal-rocked Swedish Academy that has always previously awarded the prize, the prestigious body said Monday.

Two authors, two critics and one translator — all Swedish — will join five members of the academy in picking the winners next year — including the 2019 and the delayed 2018 literature prizes — and in 2020.

Dengue cases in Delhi jump to 2,146

New Delhi, Nov 19 (PTI) Over 270 fresh cases of dengue have been reported over the last one week in the national capital, taking the total number of people diagnosed with the vector-borne disease this season to 2,146, according to a municipal report released Monday.

Of the total number of cases, 551 were reported this month till November 17.

As many as 1,114 cases were reported in October only, the report said.

Also, 450 cases of malaria and 150 of chikungunya have been reported this season, it said.

Turkey saves 44 refugees stranded on Aegean island

ISTANBUL, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Turkish coast guard on Monday rescued a total of 44 illegal migrants stranded on an island in the Aegean Sea.

The migrants, trying to sneak into a Greek island, had to take shelter overnight on Yumurta island in Turkey's western Balikesir province due to bad weather, the coast guard said in a statement posted on its website.

The force launched a rescue operation at around 4:00 a.m. local time after one migrant called the emergency service for help, the statement said.
