Indonesia confirms multiple mass prison breaks in quake-tsunami zone

Jakarta, Oct 1 (AFP) Some 1,200 Indonesian convicts escaped from three different detention facilities in the devastated region of Sulawesi following an earthquake and tsunami disaster, a justice ministry official said Monday.

The mass prison break happened after the powerful tremor sparked a wall of water that devastated the small city of Palu Friday.

Ministry of Justice official Sri Puguh Utami said inmates had fled from two overcapacity facilities in Palu and another in Donggala, an area also hit by the disaster.

Musharraf 'growing weaker' from unspecified illness, can't return to Pak now: party leader

Musharraf, 75, who has been living in Dubai since 2016, is facing the high-profile treason case for suspending the Constitution in 2007.

Truck torched in Odisha on suspicion of cattle smuggling

Bhadrak (Odisha), Oct 1 (PTI) Unidentified miscreants have torched a truck and damaged four other vehicles after they found that cattle were being allegedly smuggled in the vehicles in Odisha's Bhadrak district, police said.

The incident happened at Asurali under the jurisdiction of Dhamnghar police station Sunday, sparking tension in the area for sometime, said Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Manoranjan Samal.

Man at center of Nobel Literature scandal convicted of rape

COPENHAGEN, Denmark; 1 Oct 2018; (AP) — The man at the center of a sex abuse and financial crimes scandal in Sweden that is tarnishing the academy that awards the Nobel Prize in Literature was convicted of rape and sentenced Monday to two years in prison.

Jean-Claude Arnault, 72, a major cultural figure in Sweden, had faced two counts of rape for the same woman in 2011. He was found guilty of one rape but was acquitted of the other because the victim said she was asleep at the time and judges said her account wasn’t reliable. Arnault had denied the charges.

Iran Guard launches missiles into Syria over parade attack

Tehran, Oct 1 (AP) Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said Monday that it launched ballistic missiles into eastern Syria, targeting militants the force blames for a recent attack on a military parade.

The launch was the Islamic Republic's second such missile attack on Syria in over a year.

Iranian state television and the state-run IRNA news agency said the attacks "killed and wounded" militants in Syria, without elaborating. Syrian state media did not immediately acknowledge the strike.

Maldives court releases jailed former president on bail

MALE, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- A Maldivian court on Monday granted bail to former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom who was found guilty of obstructing justice and sentenced to 19 months in prison in June, local media reported.

The Maldives High Court granted Gayoom bail at 60,000 Maldivian rufiyaa (3,891 U.S. dollars) and granted him bail until the court reaches a verdict on the appeal filed by Gayoom's lawyers.

Gayoom is also awaiting trial on charges of trying to bribe officials to topple the government of President Abdulla Yameen in February.

Reserve Bank of India likely to raise rates at Friday's review

Mumbai, Oct 1 (PTI): The Reserve Bank is likely to increase the repo rate by 25 basis points in the upcoming monetary policy review as inflation is expected to accelerate further due to higher crude prices and the weakness in rupee.

The monetary policy committee will start its three- day meeting from October 3 to decide on the fourth bi-monthly monetary policy.

After two successive hikes, the repo rate currently stands at 6.50 per cent.

Girl gang raped in Mahoba

A girl was tricked for a job offer then gang raped by three men. According to FIR lodged with Shekhu Nagar police station, a Mahoba woman called the girl from Kanpur for a job opportunity. Woman asked the girl to stay at her house and promised to organise a job for her next morning.

On Sunday evening, woman left the house telling the girl that she is going to bring some food, leaving her behind with three men, Raghu, Akash and Dhirendra.

PWD, KDA to repair roads

KANPUR: The Public Works Department and the Kanpur Development Authority will take on the task of repairing potholes on the city roads.

One road extends from Ratanlal Nagar-Shastri Chowk-Sachhan Guest House-Kendrachal Colony to Kidwai Nagar Road. Another road stretches from Rocket Tiraha-Meghdoot Trihaa-Bada Churaha-Chunniganj-Govindpuri Pul, up to Barra By-pass. Yet another one starts from Hamirpur road-Deputy Padav-Afeem Kothi to Baradevi Naubasta.

Israel Arrests 11-Year-Old Cousin of Palestine's Ahed Tamimi

Gaza; GANASHAKTI: Samer Tamimi, the 11-year-old cousin of famed teen Palestinian activist Ahed, was arrested on Friday by Israeli occupation forces, as reported by journalist Dena Takruri.

The child's father said the army arrested Samer and other two boys his age after they failed to capture other men they were looking for. Nothing is known about his current whereabouts or when he could be released.

Samer has a scar above his right eye, the product of a bullet from the Israeli army who shot him while he was playing.
