VLADIVOSTOK, September 11. /TASS/. Pre-clinical studies to create a new domestic drug based on the yttrium-90 isotope to treat liver cancer can be completed within the next few months, Andrei Kaprin, Director General of Russia’s National Medical Research Radiology Center and full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told TASS on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum.

"Pre-clinical studies of a potential pharmaceutical drug based on the yttrium-90 isotope could be completed within the next two or three months. We have very good results there," he said.

Ethiopia, Eritrea leaders re-open common border

ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki re-opened the two countries' common border on Tuesday, more than 20 years after it was shut with the outbreak of bloody war between the two nations.

In a joint ceremony, Ahmed and Afwerki opened the key Bure-Debay-Sima border crossing and are expected later Tuesday to witness the re-opening of Zalambessa border crossing, Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrean Minister of Information said in a twitter post.

China launches first homemade polar icebreaker

SHANGHAI, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- China has launched its first domestically built polar research vessel and icebreaker "Xuelong 2" or "Snow Dragon" which will be operational in the first half of 2019.

The vessel was deployed in Shanghai on Monday and will go through a series of tests and interior decoration before beginning official operations, according to its builder Jiangnan Shipyard Group.

The launch of the vessel has extensively boosted China's polar research and expedition capabilities, said the builder.

French president's popularity continues to tumble: poll

PARIS, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- A poll released Tuesday showed that seven out of ten French people have an unfavorable opinion of President Emmanuel Macron, marking a record low approval rating likely to weigh on the reform ambitions of France's youngest head of state in modern history.

Less than a quarter of respondents view the 40-year-old president favorably, down by 12 percentage points from June's survey, according to the latest survey by pollster Odoxa, commissioned by France Inter, L'Express and regional media.

U.S. to close PLO's office in Washington: report

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Trump administration planned to announce on Monday that it will close the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO)'s office in Washington, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.

The U.S. media outlet quoted the planned remarks of U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton as saying that "the Trump administration will not keep the office open when the Palestinians refuse to start direct and meaningful negotiations with Israel."

Number of British nationals becoming Irish citizens up sharply due to Brexit

DUBLIN, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- The number of British nationals becoming Irish citizens stood at 529 persons in 2017, more than five times higher than the figure of 98 recorded in the previous year, reported local media on Sunday.

The Irish Times, a local daily newspaper, quoted Senator Neale Richmon of the Irish parliament as saying that the 2016 number of British nationals giving up their citizenship for Irish passports was almost doubled than the 2015 figure which stood at 54.

Shooting in Alabama McDonald's leaves 1 dead, 4 injured

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- A man was killed and four others were wounded early Sunday during a shooting at a McDonald's near Auburn University in U.S. state of Alabama, police said.

Auburn Police said in press release that they received a call at approximately 2:24 a.m. local time that of shots fired in the 200 block of West Magnolia Avenue.

Officers found a 20-year-old man dead from gunshot wounds and four others who were injured from the gunfire.

Three victims were transported to East Alabama Medical Center by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.

Israel tries to cover attempt to take over Al-Aqsa mosque

RAMALLAH, Palestine, Sept 10 (NNN-XINHUA) - Palestine Liberation Organisation's (PLO's) official, Adnan Husseini, said that, Israel "is giving an official cover to its plans to control" Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Husseini made the remarks, in response to the participation of an Israeli minister, in a tour by a group of settlers, into the holy site. The tour was considered by Palestinians "an incursion."

Reached between European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and U.S. President Donald Trump in late July, the truce has somewhat eased trade tensions between the two sides in recent weeks, but it doesn't mean they are over.
