Qatar reviewing London investments after transport ads ban

28 Nov 2022; MEMO: Qatar has launched a review of its investments in London after the city's transport authority this week banned the Gulf state's tourism advertisements on the capital's buses, taxis and Underground train system, Saturday's Financial Times reported, Reuters reports

The paper said the move by Transport for London (TfL) was triggered by concerns over the soccer World Cup host's stance on LGBT+ rights and its treatment of migrant workers.

Saudi Arabia has declared a public holiday on Wednesday as it celebrates the national team's sensational FIFA World Cup win against Argentina, Anadolu News Agency reports.

The ‏national holiday will be for all employees in "government and the private sector, as well as students in all educational stages," according to the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

Qatar FIFA: 2.95m World Cup tickets sold

22 Nov 2022; MEMO: Nearly three million World Cup tickets have been sold for this years championship in Qatar, the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) announced yesterday.

"2.95mn tickets had been sold up to Sunday's opening day," a FIFA spokesperson told Agence France-Presse (AFP), adding that Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Mexico, Britain, the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, France, India and Brazil were the "top buying markets."

19 Nov 2022; MEMO: President of the Republic of Liberia George Weah arrived on Friday in Doha to attend the FIFA World Cup 2022 tournament, set to start on Sunday, at the invitation of Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Al-Thani, Qatar News Agency reported.

Weah and the accompanying delegation were welcomed upon arrival at Hamad International Airport by Minister of Sports and Youth Salah Bin Ghanim Al-Ali and Charges D'affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Liberia to the State Ali Sylla.

19 Nov 2022; MEMO: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is expected to attend the official opening ceremony of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which commences on Sunday in Qatar.

Informed sources have confirmed to the German Press Agency (DPA) that the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani has sent an official invitation to Tebboune to attend the opening ceremony and the first World Cup match between Qatar and Ecuador.

US Secretary of State Blinken to attend 2022 FIFA World Cup match in Qatar next week

MOSCOW, November 15. /TASS/. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will attend the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar next week, Politico, a US-based political daily, reported on Tuesday.

According to the report, Blinken is set to attend a match of the quadrennial global football championship on November 21 between the national teams of the United States and Wales.

Politico also stated that the US secretary of state "is also expected to hold talks with Qatari leaders," but did not provide further details.
