China calls on Washington to unveil bio-labs in Ukraine

9 March 2022; MEMO: A spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry said yesterday that Beijing is urging Washington to disclose details of US-funded biological labs in Ukraine. The spokesman demanded disclosure of the types of viruses stored in these labs, as well as details of the research conducted in them. Given the nature of the current situation in Ukraine, he added, all parties should ensure the safety of the labs.

Asia stocks mixed after Wall St falls, US bans Russian oil

BEIJING (AP) — Most Asian stock markets rebounded Wednesday following Wall Street’s decline while Chinese shares sank after inflation edged higher.

Already high oil prices rose further, adding more than $2 per barrel following President Joe Biden’s ban on imports of Russian crude.

Tokyo, Sydney and Southeast Asian markets gained. Shanghai and Hong Kong retreated. South Korean markets were closed for a presidential election.

Hong Kong leader says no fixed time frame for mass testing

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said Wednesday that reducing the skyrocketing number of deaths in the latest coronavirus surge is the city’s priority, putting a plan to test the entire population on hold in the latest flip-flop in the government’s pandemic response.

Lam said there is “no specific time frame” for a citywide testing, two weeks after she announced it would happen this month. Her earlier announcement, coupled with rumors of an accompanying lockdown of the city, left store shelves bare as residents stockpiled daily necessities.

Indian regime seriously violates human rights of ethnic minorities: Chinese scholar

Pakistan to continue with China to expand Billion Tree Tsunami project: Moin Ul Haque

BEIJING, Mar. 7 (APP): Pakistan Ambassador to China Moin Ul Haque said that Pakistan would continue to work with China to improve the environment, promote low-carbon initiatives, and expand Pakistan’s Billion Tree Tsunami project.

The climate governance, low-carbon environmental protection and animal protection areas are very close to the heart of Prime Minister Imran Khan, he said.

“We are working with the Chinese government to help us expand Billion Tree Tsunami project,” he told China Economic Net (CEN).

China’s trade rose in Jan-Feb, before Russia invaded Ukraine

BEIJING (AP) — China’s exports rose by double digits in January and February before Russia’s attack on Ukraine roiled the global economy.

Exports grew by 16.3% over a year earlier to $544.7 billion in a sign global demand was recovering before President Vladimir Putin’s Feb. 24 invasion, customs data showed Monday. Imports advanced 15.5% to $428.7 billion despite a Chinese economic slowdown that the war threatens to worsen.

China lashes Washington over Quad, North Korea

BEIJING (AP) — China’s top diplomat on Monday accused Washington of trying to create an Asian version of the U.S.-European NATO military alliance and said it is up to the Biden administration to improve relations with North Korea.

U.S. policy toward East Asia and the Indian Ocean and efforts to strengthen military ties with Japan, Australia and India are a “disaster that disrupts regional peace and stability,” Wang Yi said at a news conference.

China calls Russia its chief ‘strategic partner’ despite war

BEIJING (AP) — China’s Foreign Minister on Monday called Russia Beijing’s “most important strategic partner,” amid its continued refusal to condemn the invasion of Ukraine.

Wang Yi said ties with Moscow constituted “one of the most crucial bilateral relationships in the world.”

China has broken with the U.S., Europe and others that have imposed sanctions on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. Beijing has said sanctions create new issues and threaten a political settlement of the conflict.
