Beijing expands COVID-19 daily testing capacity to 90,000 to contain new infections

BEIJING, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Beijing is conducting extensive COVID-19 screening, with its daily testing capacity reaching over 90,000 samples, as the Chinese capital works to stem new indigenous cases that have emerged in the past few days.

The city reported 79 confirmed domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases from June 11 to 14, most of which were related to the now-closed Xinfadi market, a large wholesale market of fruit, vegetable, and meat in Beijing's Fengtai District, according to the local health commission.

China begins mass testing in Beijing as 67 new corona cases appear

Beijing, Jun 15 (PTI) China has begun the mass testing of hundreds of people who had visited a Beijing wholesale market which sparked a fresh bout of coronavirus cases even as the country reported 67 new COVID-19 infections including 42 in the capital.

In a bid to stem the spread of the contagion, the authorities in Beijing have conducted the nucleic acid test on 29,386 people who had visited the Xinfadi wholesale market since May 30, Gao Xiaojun, spokesman for the Beijing Health Commission, said on Monday.

Death toll in China's oil tanker explosion rises to 19

Beijing, Jun 14 (PTI) The death toll in the oil tanker explosion in east China's Zhejiang Province has risen to 19, the local authorities said on Sunday.

About 166 injured people are undergoing treatment in hospitals, the publicity department of the city of Wenling said.

The explosion took place on Saturday near a village along the Shenyang-Haikou Expressway, the department said.

China reports 57 new cases, highest daily number in 2 months

BEIJING (AP) — China on Sunday reported its highest daily total of new coronavirus cases in two months after the capital’s biggest wholesale food market was shut down following a resurgence in local infections.

There were 57 confirmed cases in the 24 hours through midnight Saturday, the National Health Commission reported. That was the highest daily toll since mid-April and included 36 in Beijing, the capital.

18 dead, 189 hurt as tanker truck explodes on China highway

BEIJING (AP) — A tanker truck exploded on a highway in southeastern China on Saturday, killing 18 people and injuring at least 189 others, authorities said.

The explosion caused extensive damage to nearby buildings. One photo showed firefighters hosing down a row of buildings with blown-out facades well into the night.

Beijing district in 'wartime emergency' after virus cluster at major food market

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Beijing district put itself on a “wartime” footing and the capital banned tourism and sports events on Saturday after a cluster of novel coronavirus infections centred around a major wholesale market sparked fears of a new wave of COVID-19.

Forty-five people out of 517 tested with throat swabs at the Xinfadi market in the city’s southwestern Fengtai district had tested positive for the coronavirus, Chu Junwei, a district official, told a briefing.

China opposes U.S. restrictions on Chinese students

BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese government spokesperson on Friday denounced the U.S. restrictions on Chinese students, saying that China "firmly opposes politicizing and stigmatizing the normal exchanges of international students."

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Education said the restrictive measures taken by the United States contradicted what its leaders had said on many public occasions that Chinese students are welcomed in the United States.

Pakistani company signs deal with Chinese wind turbine producer to expand renewable energy

BEIJING, June 12 (APP): A major developer of wind energy in Pakistan, ACT Wind (Pvt) Limited, has signed a contract with Xinjiang Goldwind Science Technology Co., Ltd. to acquire 50MW suite of wind turbine for the Phase II ACT project. The suite is comprised of 20 turbines with each having a capacity of 2.5MW.

It’s the second time the two companies stroke a deal and the first can date back to four years ago when ACT project Phase I of 30MW adopted Goldwind’s wind turbines, which have been in secure and stable operation since then, China Economic Net reported on Friday.

Twitter deletes Chinese 'state-linked' disinformation network

12 June 2020; AFP: Twitter said Friday it had deleted more than 170,000 accounts linked to a Chinese government disinformation campaign that targeted Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement and sought to discredit the United States.

The revelation came as fellow American tech company, video messaging app Zoom, said it acceded to Beijing's demands that it close accounts of US and Hong Kong activists who gathered on the popular chat app to mark the deadly Tiananmen crackdown.

China, US should resume timely communication on trade: China advisers

BEIJING, June 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) — China and the United States should resume timely communication on trade and other issues, an adviser to the Chinese cabinet said, stressing that the world’s two biggest economies are too intertwined to be decoupled.

The coronavirus pandemic has worsened already poor relations between Beijing and Washington, with accusations from the Trump administration of a Chinese cover-up and delayed release of information about the outbreak.
