India: Ker govt to press Centre to frame law for expatriates' welfare

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 2 (PTI) The Kerala government on Thursday said it would press the Centre to frame necessary legislation to ensure the welfare of expatriates.

Inaugurating a conference being held as part of the second Loka Kerala Sabha (LKS), a platform of Non-Resident Keralites from 47 countries and 21 states, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan assured his government "will take up the matter of the legislation with the Centre".

India: Thousands take out rally against CAA in Kochi

Kochi, Jan 1 (PTI) Holding national flags and placards which read: "Born in India, Lived in India, will die in India", thousands of Muslims hit the streets in this port city on the New Year day, demanding that the Modi government withdraw the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

The people participating in the massive rally, took out from the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium here, raised slogans against the Central government's decision to implement CAA and carried photos of Mahatma Gandhi, B R Ambedkar and Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad.

India: State Assemblies have their own privileges: Ker CM on resolution against CAA

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 1 (PTI) A day after the Kerala assembly passed a resolution against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday rejected BJP's criticism against it, saying the state assemblies have their own privileges.

Hours after the assembly had passed the resolution on Tuesday demanding the scrapping of the CAA, union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had hit out at the Left government and said Vijayan should seek "better legal advise".

India: Kerala Assembly passes resolution against CAA

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 31 (PTI) The Kerala Assembly on Tuesday passed a resoultion demanding scrapping of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), becoming the first state in the country to do so.

While Chief Ministers of non-BJP ruled states like Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal have announced that they would not implement CAA, CPI(M)-ruled Kerala was the first to take the legislature route to register its opposition to the law.

India: All states have to implement CAA, says Union Minister

Kochi, Dec 30 (PTI): Amid protest by many non-BJP ruled states against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), the Centre on Monday said the states have to implement the legislation as it had been passed by Parliament.

"Under the Constitution, they (states) have to implement it (CAA)", Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal told a press conference convened here to convey the views of the Centre as well as the BJP on the CAA.

India: Ancient Kerala church opens gates to Muslims for prayers

Kochi, Dec 30 (PTI) Opening a new chapter in the history of communal harmony in Kerala, an ancient church in nearby Kothamangalam opened its gates to hundreds of Muslims, who were participating in an anti-CAA protest, to offer prayers.

"I could experience the real spirit of India when authorities of an ancient church in Kothamangalam provided us space to offer Maghrib Namaz," Sayyid Munavvar Ali Shihab Thangal, an influential spiritual leader of Kerala Muslims, who led the namaz, told PTI.

India: Joint protests to be held in Kerala against CAA

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 29 (PTI): A meeting of various political parties and socio-religious outfits, convened by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi VIjayan here, on Sunday decided to hold joint protests against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The over three-hour-long meeting, attended by MLAs, MPS, major Front leaders and representatives of various outfits, entrusted the Chief Minister and the opposition leader in the state assembly, Ramesh Chennithala, to hold discussions and decide upon further course of action in this regard.

India: Ker Governor says eminent historian Irfan Habib tried to disrupt his speech

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 28 (PTI): Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Saturday said eminent historian Irfan Habib had tried to disrupt his inaugural address at the Indian History Congress and this "intolerance" towards a different opinion was "undemocratic".

Efforts were made to interrupt his speech on stage and from the audience during the Indian History Congress at Kannur, Khan said in a series of tweets with photographs.

Habib also questioned Khan's right to quote Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad and shouted saying he should quote Godse, the Governor said in another tweet

India: No plan to set up detention centres in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 27 (PTI): The Kerala government on Friday said it was not planning to set up detention centres in the state to house illegal immigrants.

No such decision has been taken, a statement from Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said adding false propaganda was being carried out in a section of the media with regard to the detention centres.
