India: Man gets 10 years in jail for sodomising minor

Palghar, Dec 6 (PTI) A district court here convicted and sentenced a 33-year-old Dahanu resident to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for sodomising a 13-year-old boy.

In an order issued on Thursday, district judge S S Gulhane stated that Rajesh Shingada was guilty under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Indian Penal Code.

India: Malik, Gorhe disapprove of Hyderabad encounter killings

Mumbai, Dec 6 (PTI) Fear would have been instilled in the people's minds had the Hyderabad woman veterinarian rape- murder case's accused been hanged in public square after following due legal process, NCP chief spokesperson Nawab Malik said on Friday.

Malik also disapproved of the killings of the four accused in an encounter in Hyderabad, saying justice cannot be delivered in an "unjust manner".

India: Onion price reaches Rs 11,000 per quintal mark in Nashik

Nashik, Dec 2 (PTI) The wholesale price of onions of the summer variety rose to Rs 11,000 per quintal on Monday during auction at the Kalwan Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) here in Maharashtra.

Monday was the first trading day of December and the wholesale price of the summer crop of onions was the highest this season in Nashik district, a major producer of the vegetable, APMC sources said.

The previous highest wholesale auction price of onions was Rs 9,000 per quintal recorded at the Kalwan APMC last month, they said.

India: Man paraded naked in Maha for rape bid on minor girl

Nagpur, Dec 1 (PTI) A 35-year-old man was paraded naked on Sunday evening by people for trying to rape a four- year-old girl at her house in Pardi area of Nagpur in Maharashtra, police said.

Local people thrashed the accused Jawahar Vaidya, tied his hands with a rope and paraded him naked on streets before handing him over to the police, an official said.

India: Maha govt to review bullet train project: Thackeray

Mumbai, Dec 2 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has ordered a review of all on-going development projects in the state, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train.

The bullet train project has faced stiff opposition from farmers and tribals whose lands are to be acquired.

"This government is of the common man. Like you asked now, yes, we will review the bullet train (project). Have I stayed the bullet train project like Aarey car shed? No, I haven't," Thackeray told reporters here late Sunday night.

Mumbai, Dec 1 (PTI) Senior Congress MLA Nana Patole was on Sunday elected Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

Pro tem speaker Dilip Walse Patil made the announcement after BJP candidate Kisan Kathore withdrew his nomination earlier in the day.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and some senior MLAs then escorted Patole to the Speaker's chair.

India: Malegaon terror: SC to hear plea against bail granted to accused terrorist Sadhvi Pragya

New Delhi, Nov 29 (PTI) The Supreme Court Friday said it would hear after two weeks a plea challenging the Bombay High Court's April 2017 order granting bail to Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, one of the accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case.

Thakur, now a sitting BJP MP, was granted bail on April 25, 2017 by the high court which said "no prima facie" case was made out against her in the case.

India: Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena-NCP-Cong govt wins floor test

Mumbai, Nov 30 (PTI) The Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government of the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress alliance won the floor test in the Maharashtra Assembly on Saturday.

Altogether 169 MLAs vote in favour of the motion of confidence, pro tem Speaker Dilip Walse Patil informed the House.

Four MLAs abstained, he said.
