India: 60-year-old man held for raping and brutalising woman

Mumbai, Dec 31 (PTI) A 60-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping and brutalising a 25-year-old woman under the pretext of giving her job as a maid, Mumbai Police said on Tuesday.

Prima facie, the accused Saleem Zaveri raped the woman repeatedly at his flat in suburban Bandra, where he stays alone, over a period of the last 15 days, a police officer said, adding that the accused used to insert a candle into the private parts of the woman.

India: Fed up of mother's constant sickness, man kills her

Palghar, Dec 30 (PTI) A man allegedly killed his 62- year-old mother in Maharashtra's Palghar district after being fed up of her constant sickness, police said on Monday.

The incident took place in Tarapur town on Sunday when the accused, Jaiprakash Dhibhi (30), hit his mother Chandrawati with an iron rod while she was in the kitchen at their home, police inspector Rakesh Pagare said.

The woman died on the spot, he said.

India: Protest march in Pune against new Citizenship Act, NRC

Pune, Dec 29 (PTI) Hundreds of people took out a march in Maharashtra's Pune city on Sunday to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens.

The protesters shouted slogans against the new citizenship law and held placards with messages like "We reject Modi Made Holocaust", "We Reject CAA and NRC", "Stop dividing India" and "Boycott CAA and NRC".

India: Journalists slam attacks on media during CAA protests

Mumbai, Dec 26 (PTI) Journalists' organisations here on Thursday staged a demonstration against attacks on media persons during the coverage of protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, and the high-handed behaviour of police.

They also slammed the government's tendency to suspend of Internet during such agitations, and the recent advisories to news channels which warned against "anti-national attitudes".

India: Headmaster held for molesting 14-year-old student

Thane, Dec 27 (PTI) The headmaster of a private school in Bhiwandi taluka here has been arrested for allegedly molesting a 14-year-old student for over a fortnight, police said on Friday.

The district rural police arrested Pramod Nayak on Thursday and charged him under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Bhiwandi taluka police station SHO said.

India: Students, activists hold anti-CAA protest in Mumbai

Mumbai, Dec 27 (PTI) Students and social activists on Friday held a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The protesters gathered at the Azad Maidan in south Mumbai and gave slogans against the government. They carried banners decrying the Modi government over the move.

India: Pro-CAA rally at Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan

Mumbai, Dec 27 (PTI) A large number of people gathered for a pro-CAA rally at the historic August Kranti Maidan, where a massive protest against the Citizenship Act was held last week.

At the rally, organised by BJP's Sanvidan Sanman Manch', supporters of CAA were seen carrying national flags along with placards with pro-CAA and NRC messages and shouting slogans.

India: Arrogance often leads to doom: Sanjay Raut

Mumbai, Dec 26 (PTI) In a veiled dig at former ally BJP, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Thursday said arrogance often leads to downfall of people.

The remark came in the backdrop of the BJP's tough stand over protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

"Toofan mein kashtian aur ghamand mein hastiyan aksar doob jaati hain" (ships in a storm and personalities due to arrogance often sink), Raut said in a tweet.

India: 11 booked for kidnapping, raping 21-year-old in Maha

Palghar, Dec 26 (PTI) A case has been registered against 11 people for allegedly kidnapping, raping and torturing a 21-year-old girl for more than a year in Vasai taluka of Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said on Thursday.

The Vasai police on Wednesday registered an offence against 11 people and no arrest has been made in this regard, police public relations officer Hemant Katkar said.

According to the complainant, the accused, who are residents of Rangaon and Kalam in Vasai, allegedly kept her in confinement, raped and tortured her, he added.

India: Equities deepen losses as worries over economy resurface

Mumbai, Dec 24 (PTI) Benchmark equity gauges furthered losses on Tuesday after investors fretted over IMF's comment that the Indian economy is in the middle of a "significant" slowdown.

Participants also appeared cautious ahead of December month F&O expiry and year-end holidays.

After trading on a volatile note through the day, the 30-share BSE Sensex ended 181.40 points, or 0.44 per cent, lower at 41,461.26.

Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty closed 48.20 points, or 0.39 per cent, down at 12,214.55.
