India: UP panchayat polls: Congress to contest on all seats

Lucknow, Mar 16 (PTI) The Congress will contest on all seats during the upcoming panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh, said state party president Ajay Kumar Lallu on Tuesday.

A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting chaired by Lallu, in which party MLAs and former MPs took part, a release issued here said.

According to the release, it was unanimously decided that the Congress will contest the elections on issues like unemployment, inflation, and farmers' woes.

India: Court awards 10-year jail term to rapist in UP

Ghaziabad, Mar 15 (PTI) A POCSO court awarded 10 years imprisonment to a man for raping a minor and also slapped a fine of Rs 1.80 lakh on him.

Special public prosecutor Utakarsh Vats told PTI that an FIR was lodged at Modinagar Police Station against Shushil for raping a minor in 2019. He was known to the victim's family and visited her house often, Vats said.

Chief Special Judge of POCSO court Mahendra Srivastav pronounced the verdict.

India: BSP to contest assembly polls in 3 states, UT on its own

Lucknow, Mar 15 (PTI) BSP president Mayawati announced on Monday that the party would contest the assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry on its own, saying it had a "bitter experience" of aligning with other parties in the past.

Mayawati also stated that her party would go alone in the Uttar Pradesh assembly election next year.

India: Banking business in city closes due to strike

Kanpur: Banks on strike. Transactions on hold. Customers maintain patience. Today remains the second day of the banking strike in support of the employee's various demands including privatisation of the banks.

During the strike on the first day when the branch of Bank of India at Birhana Road opened, the employees and union office bearers reached there and started raising slogans. As a result, the bank was closed.

India: Farmers' protest against new farm laws may continue till Dec: Tikait

Allahabad, Mar 14 (PTI) The Bhartiya Kisan Union-led farmer agitation against the three central farm laws may continue till December this year, the outfit's national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait said here on Sunday.

Tikait made the statement while talking to reporters here after his recent visit to the poll-bound West Bengal.

India: Spurt in parking fee at medical college cardiology wing

Kanpur: There is difference in parking charges at the medical college here. If there is spurt in rate at Cardiology institute, other places provide parking at cheaper rate.

Undeniably the vehicle parking charge at Cardiology institute in GSVM College has been far higher than other parking slots at the LLR Hospital.

It is to be noted here that there runs three separate stands at LLR hospital. There has been no increase in the rate there. Although the rate between bike and car may vary.

India: UP STF arrests PFI 'training commander'

Gorakhpur (UP), Mar 14 (PTI) Police in Uttar Pradesh have arrested a man whom they alleged to be a training commander of the Popular Front of India (PFI).

Mohammad Rashid was apprehended from near Basti railway station in Basti district of the state when he was trying to go to Mumbai via Lucknow to take part in the upcoming meetings or training sessions of the PFI, the Uttar Pradesh Police's Special Task Force (STF) said on Sunday.

India: One held for harassing woman in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar, Mar 14 (PTI) A man was arrested for allegedly harassing a 30-year-old woman when she was returning home from a market here, police said on Sunday.

Another accused is at large, they said.

On Saturday evening, the woman was returning home from the market when the two accused, Shubham and Sonu, harassed her in Gandhi Nagar locality under New Mandi police station area, Station House Officer (SHO) Anil Kapervan said.

When the woman opposed the accused, they threatened her, he said.

India: Ambulance drivers allegedly duping patients

Kanpur: Although there was applied tough measures to check the deviant ways of the ambulance drivers yet they are allegedly once again making money from the hapless patients.

They not only entice them of better treatment at private nursing homes, on lesser amount but also earn enough money in the process.They formulate their own peculiar ways to negotiate with the poor crying patients.

Initiating strict action against them, Dr R B Kamal, principal, Ganesh Shanker Vidyarthi Medical College, had  put a control on their unfair acts. But they have become active now badly.

India: UP CM Adityanath withdrawing cases against himself: BSP MP

Ballia (UP), Mar 13 (PTI) BSP MP Afzal Ansari has accused the BJP of indulging in politics of hatred and pushing the country backwards by five decades by "destroying" social harmony.

Ansari claimed that after the upcoming assembly elections to five states were over, the BJP government would divide Uttar Pradesh into four parts.
