Pakistan woman gets Indian citizenship 35 years after application

Muzaffarnagar, Oct 4 (PTI) Thirty-five years after she applied for Indian citizenship, a Pakistani woman, married to a man in Muzaffarnagar city and residing in the country on a long-term visa, has been granted Indian nationality.

According to a local intelligence official, 55-year-old Zubeda had married Syed Mohammad Zaved, a resident of Yogenderpur locality here, 35 years ago. She had applied for Indian citizenship immediately after her marriage; however, it was not accepted on some legal grounds.

India: Woman burnt alive over dowry in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Oct 4 (PTI) A woman was allegedly burnt to death over dowry in Saidham Colony in the city, police said on Friday.

The incident happened on Thursday evening in Civil Lines police station area here.

India: AMUTA asks Centre to restore normalcy in Kashmir

Aligarh (UP), Oct 4 (PTI) Aligarh Muslim University Teachers Association (AMUTA) has asked the Centre to take urgent steps to restore normalcy in Kashmir.

The Executive committee of AMUTA in a resolution passed on Thursday said the only way forward in the valley is by "winning over the hearts of the Kashmiri people".

The resolution also cautioned the government on legitimate concerns of the people over the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise.

India: City attracts film makers to shoot films

Kanpur: City has always attracted the filmmakers owing to its various locales apt to shoot scenes. In the past, various films shootings hàve been taken. Currently, one more film based on Premchand story will be filmed here. It is expected to begin soon.

Although this documentary type of Hindi movie will be based on the common man's everyday problems.

India: Newborn baby girl found abandoned in forested area

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Oct 2 (PTI) An abandoned baby girl wrapped in a plastic bag was found in a forested area in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district, a police official said on Wednesday.

Some people passing through the area, near Banat town under Babri police station limits, found the newborn after they heard her cries, he said.

The police reached the spot and took the child to a hospital where she is undergoing treatment, the official said.

India: Shahjahanpur rape victim to move High Court for bail

Shahjahanpur (UP), Oct 1 (PTI) A day after a local court dismissed the bail application of the law student who had accused former Union minister Chinmayanand of rape, her father here said they would move the High Court against the order.

"The District Judge has rejected the bail of my daughter and now we will move a bail application in the High Court," her father told medipersons here.

Total 155 nominations filed in UP for assembly bypolls

Lucknow, Sep 30 (PTI) A total of 155 nominations have been filed for the Uttar Pradesh bypolls, voting for which will be held on October 21, the Election Commission said on Monday.

Of the 155 nominations filed so far for the 11 assembly seats going to by-election in the state, 121 were filed on Monday -- the last day of filing the papers.

India: Court rejects bail pleas of Chinmayanand, law student

Shahjahanpur (UP), Sep 30 (PTI) A district court here on Monday rejected the bail pleas of BJP leader Swami Chinmayanand and the law student who has accused him of rape.

The two were sent to 14-day-judicial custody after being arrested in cases that now run parallel.

The former Union minister was booked under section 376C, a charge short of rape, on the basis of a complaint filed by the 23-year-old woman who studied at a college run by his ashram.

India: Rape accused BJP leader Chinmayanand discharged from hospital

Lucknow, Sep 30 (PTI) Former Union minister Swami Chinmayanand, against whom a law student had levelled rape charges, was discharged from hospital on Monday.

He was admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences here.

The bulletin issued by the hospital said, "Swami Chinmayanand was discharged today from the cardiology ward of the SGPGI at 6.30 pm."

India: Denizens deposit onions into bank's safe locker

Kanpur: Following restrictions over onion export as many as 125 tonnes of onion have been stopped for being despatched to another country. Five trucks laden with this condiment were not heading towards Nepal from the city. One truck contains 25 tonnes of onions. Generally, it takes two to four or five days in reaching Nepal by the land route.

Despite this measure, the denizens have reached the branch of a nationalised bank and deposited the onions at the bank's locker.
