India: UP ministers to start paying income tax

Lucknow, Sep 13 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday decided that ministers will start paying their own income tax, ending a four-decade-old practice of the state exchequer shelling out the amount annually for them.

The direction follows criticism in the media of a law enacted in 1981 which ensures that the state's chief minister and ministers don't pay any income tax themselves.

India: Rape accused BJP leader Chinmayanand questioned by SIT

Shahjahanpur (UP), Sep 13 (PTI) BJP leader and former Union minister Swami Chinmayanand has been quizzed by the SIT for around seven hours in connection with a law student's allegation that he raped her, his counsel said on Friday.

The special investigation team, formed on the orders of the Supreme Court, summoned Chinmayanad to the police lines on Thursday night, his counsel Om Singh said.

Later, he was brought back to his residence Divya Dham in Mumukshu Ashram under heavy security, he said.

India: Mahatma Gandhi's statue desecrated in UP

Jaulaun, Sep 13 (PTI) A statue of Mahatma Gandhi was desecrated by unidentified people at a college in Uttar Pradesh's Jaulaun district, police said on Friday.

The matter was reported by the Principal of the Gandhi Inter College, Orai, Ravi Kumar, on Friday morning, Superintendent of Police Satish Kumar said.

The officer said an FIR has been registered against unidentified persons on a compliant from the college and work to repair the statue has started.

Locals and political parties staged a protest against the incident.

India: Man booked for sexually harassing minor in UP

Muzaffarnagar, Sep 12 (PTI) A man was booked for sexually harassing a 14-year-old girl, police said here on Thursday.

The incident allegedly took place at Sujru village in the district on Wednesday.

The accused was thrashed by people and handed over to police.

According to SHO Anil Kapervan, a case has been registered against the accused, Arjun (20).

The minor's family alleged that her clothes were torn and she was sexually harassed when she was returning home from a shop.

India: UP govt reconsidering traffic penalties

Lucknow, Sep 12 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh government is reconsidering the new penalties for breaking traffic rules and may join the growing band of states that find the fines listed in the amended Motor Vehicles Act too high.

"In the interest of the people of Uttar Pradesh, the government is reconsidering what and how it should be done," state Transport Minister Ashok Kataria said Thursday.

"We will soon take a decision and come out with the rates of penalty," the minister said.

India: 2 booked for 'objectionable' remarks against Modi

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Sep 11 (PTI) Two people have been booked in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district for posting "objectionable comments" on social media against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, police said on Wednesday.

Acting on the complaint of one Shivam Meghali, police booked Bijender Saini and Prince Ashok Acharya on Tuesday under the Information Technology Act, Station House Officer Anil Kaparvan said.

India: Ambedkar's statue damaged in UP's Saharanpur

Saharanpur, Sep 10 (PTI) A statue of BR Ambedkar was damaged at Ghunna village in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district, police said on Tuesday.

They said the incident led to disenchantment in the Dalits when they noticed the damaged statue on Tuesday morning.

"People blocked a road in protest against the incident. Police reached the spot on getting information and requested them to lift the blockade. Amid this, a scuffle took place between police and the protesters," they said.

India: UPCLDF Chairman's arrival at CHC dazed staff

Kanpur: "No greed for power, only desire of service to people," said Virendra Kumar Tiwari, UPCLDF Chairman on Tuesday afternoon at Bidhnu CHC inspection here on Tuesday. He stayed there for a few minutes in the middle of his journey break for Mahoba.

It was a surprise visit. Not only the staff was astounded but also the CHC superintendent Dr SP Yadav looked dazed at his visit to the community health centre. The doctor with a mark of respect offered his chair to the minister to sit. But he himself dragged another vacant chair to sit.
