Iraq: Sunni and Shia clerics urge unity at Makkah meeting

05 Aug 2021; MEMO: Sunni and Shia clerics from Iraq have met in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, to promote unity and coexistence between Islam's two main sects. The Iraqi Scholars Forum got together yesterday in the Holy City.

The meeting was organised by the Makkah-based Muslim World League (MWL). Around eighty prominent religious leaders and scholars took part in an effort to bridge the sectarian divide.

Explosive devices strike US-led forces in Iraq

06 Aug 2021; MEMO: Unknown militants yesterday detonated an explosive device near a convoy of the international US-led coalition in the central Iraqi province of Babylon.

Ali Al-Samer, a senior officer at Babylon police, told Anadolu Agency that the explosive device was planted "on the sidewalk of the road." He added that the attack "partially damaged one of the surrounding trucks."

Local authorities have opened an investigation into the incident, he added .

Dismissed Tunisian PM Mechichi appears for first time in 11 days

05 Aug 2021; MEMO: Tunisia's anti-corruption authority aired photographs dated on Thursday of ex-prime minister Hichem Mechichi declaring his properties at the agency's headquarters, reported Reuters.

This was his first public appearance since his July 25 dismissal by President Kais Saied.

Palestinian leader Haniyeh meets Speaker of Iran's Shura Council

06 Aug 2021; MEMO:The head of the Hamas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, met with the Speaker of Iran's Shura Council in Tehran on Thursday. Haniyeh and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf discussed the latest developments in the Palestinian issue, the resistance movement reported.

According to Hamas, Haniyeh is in the Iranian capital with a delegation from the movement to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran's President-elect, Ebrahim Raisi.

US State Department calls on Israel not to evict Sheikh Jarrah families

06 Aug 2021; MEMO: The US State Department has urged Israel to refrain from evicting Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah area of occupied East Jerusalem. Nevertheless, spokesman Ned Price told reporters on Thursday that the department believes that the proposal offered by an Israeli court this week is a matter for the Israeli and Palestinian parties to consider.

Iran vows 'decisive' response to 'foolish' Israeli action

06 Aug 2021; MEMO: A spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry has said that his country will respond firmly to any "foolish action" by Israel.

"In another brazen violation of International law, the Israeli regime now blatantly threatens Iran with military action," tweeted Saeed Khatibzadeh. "We state this clearly: ANY foolish act against Iran will be met with a DECISIVE response…. Do not test us."
