Half a million Syrians killed in past ten years

02 June 2021; MEMO: The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said nearly half a million Syrians have been killed since the war erupted in 2011.

The rights body said in a new report marking the tenth anniversary of Syria's war, that it has documented the killing of 494,438 people since March 2011 when Syrian regime forces cracked down on peaceful protesters demanding political reform.

Morocco To Work With EU To Solve Migrants Crisis In Spanish Enclave: King

RABAT, Jun 2 (NNN-MAP) – Moroccan King, Mohammed VI, yesterday, ordered his government to work with Spain, France and the European Union (EU), to solve the ongoing migrants crisis in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave that borders Morocco.

Morocco made agreements with France and Spain, clearing the hurdles for the return of dozens of underage Moroccans, who entered Ceuta illegally last month, said a joint statement released by Moroccan foreign and interior ministries.

Two Air Force Pilots Killed In Accident In Southwestern Iran

TEHRAN, Jun 2 (NNN-IRNA) – Two military pilots of the Iranian Air Force died yesterday, at the Vahdati Air Force Base, in the south-western Iranian city of Dezful, due to a “technical failure” of an F-5 training plane.

The Special Governor of Dezful, Ali Farahmandpour, stressed that, the accident happened on the ground, not during or after a flight, adding that, the circumstances are being investigated by a team sent to Dezful from Tehran.

EU Official Calls For Ending Israeli Blockade In Gaza To Facilitate Reconstruction

GAZA, Jun 2 (NNN-WAFA) – A senior European Union (EU) official, yesterday, called on Israel to end the blockade, which has been imposed on the Gaza Strip for 15 years, to facilitate the process of reconstruction in the coastal enclave.

EU Representative to Palestine, Sven Kuehn von Burgsdorff, told a news conference in Gaza that, the reconstruction plan in the Gaza Strip “needs to lift the blockade, to enable the populations to move freely and have a free trade.”

Israel sees probable link between Pfizer vaccine and myocarditis cases

(Reuters) --- Israel’s Health Ministry said on Tuesday it had found the small number of heart inflammation cases observed mainly in young men who received Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine in Israel were likely linked to their vaccination.

Pfizer has said it has not observed a higher rate of the condition, known as myocarditis, than would normally be expected in the general population.

Israel’s Lapid enlists Gantz, moves closer to unseating Netanyahu

(Reuters) --- Israel’s opposition leader moved closer to unseating Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday and forming a new government after agreeing terms with several parties including one led by Defence Minister Benny Gantz, a spokesman said.

During a 12-year run in top office, Netanyahu has been an often polarising figure at home and abroad. An end to his tenure may bring reprieve from domestic political turmoil, but major shifts in Israel’s foreign policy appear less likely from the staunch U.S. ally.

Veteran politician Herzog elected president of Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) — Isaac Herzog, a veteran politician and the scion of a prominent Israeli family, has been elected president, a largely ceremonial role.

An anonymous vote was held Tuesday among the 120 members of the Knesset, or parliament.

Herzog, 60, is a former head of Israel’s Labor Party and opposition leader who unsuccessfully ran against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the 2013 parliamentary elections.

He will succeed Reuven Rivlin, who is set to leave office next month.

Jordan refers 2 to security court over alleged foreign plot

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Jordan has referred the cases of two former senior officials accused of taking part in a foreign plot linked to the half-brother of King Abdullah II to a national security court, the official Petra news agency reported Tuesday.

Bassem Awadallah, a former Cabinet minister and one-time head of the royal court, and Sharif Hassan bin Zaid, a member of the royal family, were swept up in a wave of arrests in April. Prince Hamzah, a former crown prince, was placed under a form of house arrest.

Saudi stock market trading stops over technical error

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Saudi Arabia’s key stock market suspended trading Wednesday over what it referred to as an unexplained technical glitch.

Saudi state television reported the trades halting on Riyadh’s Tadawul in an urgent on-screen graphic, with an anchor saying officials were trying to fix the problem.

The Tadawul later said trading had resumed, but Saudi state TV said trading remain halted despite the stock market’s statement. There was no immediate explanation for the conflicting statements.
