Turkey rescues 32 asylum seekers in Aegean Sea

04 June 2021; MEMO: Turkey today rescued 32 asylum seekers in the Aegean Sea after they were pushed back by Greek coastal authorities into Turkish territorial waters, an official said, Anadolu Agency reports.

They were rescued from rubber boats by the Turkish Coast Guard off the coast of Cesme district in western Izmir province, said a coast guard statement.

After routine checks, they were referred to the provincial migration authority.

Algeria president describes ties with Turkey as 'excellent'

04 June 2021; MEMO: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune described his country's relations with Turkey as "excellent," highlighting Ankara's investment in the region without any political ambitions, Anadolu Agency reports.

In an interview with the French weekly Le Point published on Wednesday, Tebboune said Turkey invested around $5 billion in Algeria "without any political demands in return."

UAE-backed gunmen seize headquarters of Yemen News Agency in Aden

04 June 2021; MEMO: Armed men affiliated with the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) seized the headquarters of the official Yemen News Agency (SABA) in the provisional capital, Aden, storming it and expelling its employees on Tuesday.

The news agency's management in Aden said in a statement on Wednesday evening that "an armed group affiliated with the STC stormed the SABA headquarters in Aden and threw out the security guards and employees present in the building."

Algeria will never normalise ties with Israel: President

04 June 2021; MEMO: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is not considering running for a second term, he told a French magazine in an interview, adding that his role is "to help the country stand up again, rebuild state institutions and ensure that the republic belongs to everyone."

Speaking to Le Point, Tebboune added that should Islamist parties win the elections, then this is not an issue "as long as it's in line with the laws of the Republic".

UN agency withdraws director from Gaza after threats

JERUSALEM (AP) — The U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees says it has recalled its Gaza director after he faced threats over remarks in which he appeared to praise Israel’s “huge sophistication” in carrying out precision strikes during last month’s Gaza war.

UNRWA, which provides essential health, education and other services in the territory, said late Thursday that it was “seriously concerned” about the threats, including a “very large protest” outside its Gaza headquarters on Monday.

Israel: Netanyahu rivals form a coalition government to oust him

Tel Aviv; 03 June 2021 (UMMN): Netanyahu rivals, led by secular centrist politician Yair Lapid, formally declared a coalition with sufficient parliamentary backing to form a government less than an hour before the midnight deadline, avoiding a fifth election.

Lapid informed Israeli President Reuven that he had formed a coalition consisting of at least 61 seats in the Knesset, but the new government will not be sworn in until later this month due to the Knesset’s recess.
