Turkey foreign minister to visit Saudi for first time since 2017

07 May 2021; MEMO: Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu is expected to visit Saudi Arabia for talks next week, as the two regional powers ramp up efforts to mend ties that have become strained, not least due to the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, Reuters has reported. It will be the first such visit since 2017.

UN coordinator concerned by surge in West Bank tension

07 May 2021; MEMO: The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, is "deeply concerned" by the tension in the occupied West Bank and Israeli attempts to expel Palestinians from Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, the international organisation said on Thursday.

Jordan appoints new director to king's office

07 May 2021; MEMO: Jordan yesterday appointed Jafar Hassan as director of the Office of King Abdullah II.

Royal Decrees also announced that the resignation of Haifa Khraisha from her position as Adviser to His Majesty for Policies had been accepted.

Kemal Al Nasser's resignation from his position as adviser to the king was also accepted.

While a final decree also accepted the resignation of Zeina Toukan from her position as adviser for Economic Affairs at the Royal Hashemite Court.

Palestinian gunmen killed after firing on Israeli base in West Bank

(Reuters) --- Three Palestinian gunmen shot at an Israeli border police base in the occupied West Bank on Friday, drawing Israeli fire that killed two of the Palestinians and critically wounded the third, border police said.

There were no reports of Israeli injuries in the incident at the Salem base, near the West Bank-Israel border by the northern Palestinian city of Jenin.

UNICEF, Libya sign deal to extend cooperation on water sanitation

TRIPOLI, May 6 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) on Thursday said it signed an agreement with the Libyan Ministry of Water Resources to extend their collaboration in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project.

Hailing its cooperation with the Libyan ministry as "outstanding," the UN agency said in a statement that its support for the North African country also includes emergency assistance for COVID-19 response.

India’s disaster hangs over countries facing COVID-19 surges

SOHAG, Egypt (AP) — Countries worldwide wrestling with new coronavirus surges are trying to ensure they aren’t hit by an India-style disaster. They face many of the same risks, including large populations that have shirked restrictions and fragile health systems shaken under the strain.

In a province along the Nile in southern Egypt, hospitals have been flooded with COVID-19 patients, a main hot spot in a third spike swelling across the country. Doctors in Sohag province warn the health system there could collapse, even as the government rushes in new supplies.

Islamic Movement calls for ongoing resistance at Al Aqsa Mosque

06 May 2021; MEMO: The Islamic Movement in Jerusalem called on Wednesday for resistance in and around Al Aqsa Mosque, and for people not to be deceived by the claim that the Israeli occupation authorities have stopped settlers from entering the Muslims' holy site.

In a media statement, the movement hailed the worshippers inside Al Aqsa Mosque and called on them to continue their struggle against the Israeli occupation forces and the Jewish settlers who desecrate the Noble Sanctuary.

Woman from Mali gives birth to 9 babies in Morocco

06 May 2021; MEMO: A woman from Mali yesterday gave birth to nine babies in Morocco. "All nine babies are doing well," the Ministry of Health of Mali said in a statement.

Twenty-five-year-old Halima Cisse flew to Morocco on 30 March, seeking medical care. She was initially believed to have been carrying seven babies.
