Libya PM renews commitment to maritime deal with Turkey

06 May 2021; MEMO: Head of the Libyan Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, affirmed that his country adheres to the maritime agreement signed between Tripoli and Ankara, and pledged not to abandon the deal.

Dbeibeh said that the Libyan government disagreed with Greece's evaluation of the agreement, stressing that "the deal serves the Libyans, and we will not withdraw from it."

Tunisia president calls for holding 'different kind' of dialogue to end crisis

06 May 2021; MEMO: Tunisian President Kais Saied said he is ready to engage in dialogue, with conditions, to get the country out of the ongoing crisis, after he rejected initiatives calling for a national dialogue.

The Tunisian presidency said in a statement on Tuesday that "President Kais Saied met today at the Carthage Presidential Palace with Secretary-General of the People's Movement, Zuhair Maghzawi" to discuss the political, economic and social impasse and ways to overcome it.

Third rocket attack targets US forces in Iraq

06 May 2021; MEMO: The Iraqi army yesterday announced that two rockets had targeted the Ain Al-Asad Air Base where American forces are stationed, in the third such attack in three days.

The army's media cell said in a statement that the two rockets fell on an unoccupied segment of the Ain Al-Asad Air Base, "without causing damage or casualties".

PA complaints to ICC over Israel's eviction of Sheikh Jarrah residents

06 May 2021; MEMO: The Palestinian Authority (PA) has complained to the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding the "forced eviction of Arab families from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of East Jerusalem", a PA official announced yesterday.

Spokesperson Ibrahim Melhem wrote on Facebook that Israel is violating international law by evicting the Palestinian families in this area to make way for illegal settlers.

Saudi Arabia mulls barring foreign pilgrims from Hajj

06 May 2021; MEMO: Saudi Arabia is considering barring overseas pilgrims from the annual Hajj pilgrimage for the second year in a row, Reuters reported yesterday.

Quoting two sources, the agency said that Riyadh was "worried" after a "global rise in the COVID-19 cases". "There has been no final decision on whether to pursue the ban," the sources stressed.

Saudi Arabia removes 'Muslims only' signs from highway to Madinah

05 May 2021; MEMO: Saudi Arabian authorities appeared to have replaced the "Muslims only" phrase from traffic signs leading to the Prophet's Mosque in Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah, Islam's second holiest site after Makkah.

Images have been shared on social media purporting to show that at least one of the highway signs now reads "Haram area" in reference to Madinah's Haram or sacred site.

Iraq pushes vaccine rollout amid widespread apathy, distrust

Baghdad, May 5 (AP) Iraq's vaccine roll-out had been faltering for weeks. Apathy, fear and rumors kept many from getting vaccinated despite a serious surge in coronavirus infections and calls by the government for people to register for shots.

It took a populist Shiite cleric's public endorsement of vaccinations and images of him getting the shot last week to turn things around.

Egyptian ministers, U.S. envoy hold talks on Ethiopia's Nile dam

CAIRO, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel Aty held talks on Wednesday with U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa Jeffrey Feltman on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) built on the Nile River, said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in a statement.

The Egyptian ministry said the meeting was held "in order to discuss the developments of the GERD file and the Egyptian position in this regard" without adding further details.

Turkey’s private sector, Gazprom launch talks on new gas import contracts, TV reports

ANKARA, May 5. /TASS/: A couple of Turkish private companies have started negotiating an extension or a renewal of gas purchasing contracts with Gazprom due to the upcoming expiration of their current agreements, the Haber Turk TV channel reported on Wednesday. The issue is about purchasing 8 bln cubic meters of gas per year.
