Libyan parliament convenes to vote on new government

The Libyan parliament's session kicked off on Monday in Sirte for a vote of confidence on the new interim government, Anadolu Agency reported.

The session began in the presence of 132 deputies – out of a total of 200 – chaired by Speaker of Parliament Aguila Saleh.

"Thank God, we meet today in Sirte to turn the page on division," Saleh said.

Earlier Monday, Libya's Prime Minister-designate Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh arrived in the coastal city of Sirte to present his unity government lineup to the House of Representatives.

US 'alarmed' by frequency of attacks on Saudi after Houthis target oil heartland

UNICEF, France grant 2.37 mln USD to rebuild Lebanon's hospital damaged in blasts

BEIRUT, March 8 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) signed on Monday in partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD) a grant agreement with the Lebanese Health Ministry to renovate a hospital severely damaged in Beirut Port's blasts, Lebanon's National News Agency reported.

The agreement values 2 million euros (2.37 million U.S. dollars).

7 killed, 3 missing in floods in northern Algeria

ALGIERS, March 7 (NNN-Xinhua) — Seven people died and three others went missing amid floods that hit the northern region of Algeria on Saturday overnight.

According to a statement of Algerian civil protection authorities on Sunday, the heavy rain that poured over Chlef province caused the Meknes River to overflow its banks, and three cars were swept away.

Seven people, including two women and two children, were killed.

A wide scale search operation is still underway to find three other missing people, the source added.

US deploys troops, military equipment to eastern Syria

08 Mar 2021; MEMO: The US army has deployed additional soldiers and military equipment to north-eastern Syria, SANA news agency reported.

The Syrian state-run agency said four US army planes, including two helicopters, landed at noon yesterday inside the US army base in the city of Ash Shaddadi, near Al-Hasakah having travelled from Iraq.

The agency pointed out that the helicopters carried American soldiers and 20 wooden boxes containing thermal missiles.

Iraq army captain killed in armed attack north of Baghdad

08 Mar 2021; MEMO: An Iraqi army captain was killed in an armed attack on a military patrol in Tarmiyah district, north of the capital Baghdad, yesterday Anadolu news agency reported.

The agency quoted Baghdad police Captain Hatem Al-Jabri as saying that an armed group opened fire on an army patrol in Tarmiyah district and killed an army captain before fleeing the scene.

Al-Jabri said the army is looking for Daesh members who are believed to be behind the attack.

Syria's President Assad and his wife test positive for COVID-19 - statement

DUBAI (Reuters) - Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad and his wife Asma have tested positive for COVID-19 after showing minor symptoms, the president’s office said in a statement on Monday.

It said they were both in good health and would continue to work while in isolation at home.
