Turkey, Iraq to open a new border crossing

26 Feb 2021; MEMO: Turkey and Iraq are planning to open a new border crossing, Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister, Adil Karaismailoglu, announced yesterday.

"The next phase will witness meetings between the public and private infrastructure companies in the two countries," Karaismailoglu said during a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart, Nasser Hussein Bandar. He added that the agreement aims to aid "enhancing the prosperity and quality of life of the Iraqi people."

Biden orders strike on Iran sites in Syria

26 Feb 2021; MEMO: President Joe Biden yesterday directed US military air strikes in eastern Syria against facilities belonging to what the Pentagon said were Iran-backed militia, in a calibrated response to rocket attacks against US targets in Iraq, Reuters reported.

The strikes appeared to be limited in scope, potentially lowering the risk of escalation.

2 US Navy warships in Mideast affected by coronavirus

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Two U.S. Navy warships operating in the Mideast have been affected by the coronavirus, authorities said Friday, with one already at port in Bahrain and another heading to port now.

A dozen troops aboard the USS San Diego, an amphibious transport dock, tested positive for COVID-19, said Cmdr. Rebecca Rebarich, a spokeswoman for the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet. The ship is at port in Bahrain.

Egypt Approves Russia’s Sputnik V Vaccine For Emergency Use

CAIRO, Feb 25 (NNN-MENA) – The Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), approved Russia’s Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use in Egypt, the country’s drug regulator said in a statement yesterday.

Mahmoud Yassin, head of EDA’s Central Administration for Biological and Innovative Products, said that, the Russian vaccine was approved, after passing assessment tests at the authority’s labs, according to the statement.

Egypt has previously approved China’s Sinopharm and Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines for emergency use.

Israel, Bahrain leaders discuss Iran, possible vaccine plant

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Bahrain’s Crown Prince Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa on Thursday discussed Iran and the possible involvement of the Gulf state in establishing a vaccine plant in Israel, the two countries said.

Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates formalised ties with Israel on Sept. 15 in part over shared concerns about Iran, in a deal forged by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
