Lebanon's Jumblatt says country needs new prime minister: newspaper

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Lebanon needs a new prime minister to help it exit a deep economic and financial crisis, one of the country’s leading politicians said in an interview published on Wednesday.

Veteran Druze power broker Walid Jumblatt said replacing Hassan Diab “should seriously be considered because he has amnesia,” according to comments to local daily L’Orient-Le Jour that were confirmed by his office.

Israeli PM tours Israeli-Lebanese border amidst escalation

Yemen’s separatists to give up self-rule, push peace deal

CAIRO (AP) — Yemen’s leading separatist group will abandon its aspirations for self-rule to implement a stalled peace deal brokered by Saudi Arabia, the group announced early Wednesday in a step toward closing a dangerous rift between nominal allies in the five-year war.

Nizar Haitham, a spokesman for the separatists’ Southern Transitional Council, an umbrella group of militias backed by the United Arab Emirates, said the separatists would give up their dreams of self-administration over southern Yemen to pursue the Riyadh agreement.

Iran launches underground ballistic missiles during exercise

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard launched underground ballistic missiles as part of an exercise involving a fake aircraft carrier in the Strait of Hormuz, state television reported Wednesday, the latest barrage in a drill that saw two American bases temporarily go on alert over the launches.

Drones separately targeted the bridge of the fake aircraft carrier, according to the state TV report. The TV did not immediately air footage of the launches or the drone attack, nor did it identify the missiles used in the drill.

Turkey: Erdogan’s party submits bill to regulate social media platforms

28 July 2020; MEMO: Turkey’s ruling party AK Party  submitted draft legislation to parliament that would enable the government to tighten its grip on social media, an official said today.

The submitted nine-article draft legislation will force social media companies with more than one million daily users in Turkey to establish a formal presence or assign a representative in Turkey.

Libya resumes international flights after 4-month halt

28 July 2020; MEMO: Libyan air carriers resumed flights on Sunday after a four-month halt in operations as part of measures taken to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Misrata International Airport said that the first flight by the private airline Libyan Wings took off in line with guidelines prepared by the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority, according to Anadolu Agency. The second plane to take off was for the Libyan state-owned Afriqiyah Airways.

Egypt to receive Russia fighter jets despite US warnings

28 July 2020; MEMO: The Egyptian army is set to receive its first Sukhoi Su-35 air-superiority fighters as pictures were captured of the Russian jets on a flight on their way to Egypt.

Five of the Sukhoi Su-35 Flankers, which are now owned by the Egyptian Air Force, were seen headed to Egypt. They are given numbers between 9210 and 9214, according to the RT’s Arabic-language news site.
