Mideast states tighten precautions to curb coronavirus spread ahead of Eid al-Adha

CAIRO, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Iran on Monday reported 2,434 new COVID-19 cases while Saudi Arabia confirmed 1,993 new infections, as the Middle East states are tightening anti-coronavirus precautions for the upcoming Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

Killing of Hezbollah fighter in Syria was a mistake: Israel

27 July 2020; MEMO: Israel did inform Hezbollah that the killing of one of the group’s fighters in Syria last week was a mistake, Lebanon’s Al-Mayadeen news channel reported on Saturday.

The message, which was transmitted between the parties by the United Nations, reportedly stated Israeli forces were unaware Hezbollah fighters were stationed in the area and warned against a response.

Mosque in West Bank set ablaze by Israeli settlers

27 July 2020; MEMO: A mosque in the city of Al-Bireh near Ramallah was set on fire and vandalised with graffiti in Hebrew in a suspected hate crime by Israeli settlers last night, reported Wafa news agency.

A Palestinian emergency services official said a bathroom area of Al-Bir and Al-Thsan mosque was burned after flammable liquid was poured through a smashed window before dawn.

Jordan and World Food Programme sign $700 million aid deal

27 July 2020; MEMO: Jordan and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) have signed a $700 million agreement to support one million vulnerable Jordanians and refugees until 2022.

The Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation in Amman said on Sunday that the agreement aims to protect the livelihoods of the most vulnerable Jordanians and refugees.

In 2019, the WFP contributed nearly $207 million in support to the local economy in Jordan through a number of activities and programmes.

Moroccan government extends powers of Integrity Commission to fight corruption

27 July 2020; MEMO: By extending the powers of the National Commission for Integrity, Prevention and Fight against Corruption, the Moroccan government is striving to combat corruption in the country.

According to government estimates, corruption causes losses amounting to between five and seven per cent of GDP and relies on the commission to prevent losses or at least to minimise them.

Israel drone crashes in Lebanon

27 July 2020; MEMO: An Israeli reconnaissance drone has crashed inside Lebanese territory “during IDF operational activity”, the Israeli army has reported, adding, “there is no concern that any information was leaked”.

The drone crashed because of a technical failure while flying over the border region during a mission, according to a report by Israel’s Channel 12.

Israel: protests might end in bloodshed, warns security minister

27 July 2020; MEMO: Israel’s Public Security Minister, Amir Ohana, warned on Sunday that violent clashes at demonstrations spreading across the country are likely to end in bloodshed, local media have reported.

“There is a feeling and high probability that it will end in bloodshed,” Ohana told public broadcaster Kan. “I am really worried by the hate in the air.”

Iran moves mock aircraft carrier to sea for live-fire drills amid US tensions

Dubai, Jul 27 (AP/PTI) Iran has moved a mock aircraft carrier to the strategic Strait of Hormuz amid heightened tensions between Tehran and the US, satellite photographs released on Monday show, likely signalling the Islamic Republic soon plans to use it for live-fire drills.

An image from Maxar Technologies taken Sunday shows an Iranian fast boat speed toward the carrier, sending waves up in its wake, after a tugboat pulled her out into the strait from the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas.

More Than 60 Killed In Violence In Sudan’s Darfur

KHARTOUM, July 27 (NNN-SUNA) – More than 60 people have been killed and another 60 injured, in violence in Sudan’s West Darfur region, the United Nations (UN), said.

About 500 militants attacked the village of Masteri in the West Darfur state on Saturday afternoon, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said, in a statement on Sunday.

“This was one of the latest of a series of security incidents reported over the last week, that left several villages and houses burned, markets and shops looted, and infrastructure damaged,” it said.
