Iran begins technical, security inspection of cameras to be installed in Karaj site

TEHRAN, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) on Sunday began technical and security inspection of cameras which are to be installed at Iran's Karaj centrifuge producing plant by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Behrouz Kamalvandi, the spokesman for the AEOI announced.

Egyptian court sentences acting Muslim Brotherhood leader to life in prison

CAIRO, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- An Egyptian court sentenced acting leader of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group Mahmoud Ezzat, along with other co-defendants, to life in prison over charges for espionage with the Palestinian Hamas movement.

Life imprisonment in Egypt is 25 years in jail.

Ezzat and other members of the banned group have been charged with storming the Egyptian eastern borders, attacking security institutions, plotting with Hamas and Hezbollah to create chaos in Egypt to bring down the authorities, the prosecution read.

Africa's COVID-19 cases surpass 9.14 mln: Africa CDC

ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa has reached 9,143,184 cases as of late Saturday evening, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

The specialized healthcare agency of the African Union (AU) said the death toll across the continent stands at 225,890 and some 8,323,377 patients have recovered from the disease so far.

South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, and Ethiopia are among the countries with the most cases on the continent, said the Africa CDC.

Israel bans travel to 10 more countries over concern of Omicron variant

JERUSALEM, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Israel's Ministry of Health on Sunday said it decided to ban travel to ten more countries to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant.

The ban will take effect on Wednesday and will include the United States, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Morocco, Portugal, Canada, Switzerland and Turkey, which will be labeled as "red" countries, according to the ministry.

The list of "red" countries already includes most of the African countries, eight European countries and the United Arab Emirates.

Israeli army arrests 4 suspects in deadly West Bank shooting

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military said Sunday that its forces apprehended four Palestinian suspects believed to have taken part in a deadly shooting in the occupied West Bank.

In Thursday’s incident, at least one Palestinian gunman opened fire on a car filled with Jewish seminary students next to a West Bank settlement outpost. Yehuda Dimentman, 25, was killed and two others were wounded near Homesh, which is considered illegal by the Israeli government.

Iraq announces evacuation of 3,817 citizens stranded in Belarus

18 Dec 2021; MEMO: The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday announced the evacuation of 3,817 of its illegal immigrants stranded at the Belarus border via ten emergency flights.

"Within one month, we managed to conduct ten exceptional flights to return those wishing to return voluntarily," the ministry's Spokesperson Ahmed Al-Sahaf disclosed in a statement, of which Anadolu Agency received a copy.

Tunisia: 'Citizens Against the Coup' initiative begins Tunis sit-in

18 Dec 2021; MEMO: The "Citizens Against the Coup" initiative announced on Friday starting an open sit-in at Habib Bourguiba Avenue in the centre of the capital to call on ending the "coup against the constitution".

"As of today (Friday), we will start an open sit-in until ending the coup and overthrowing the one who turned against the Constitution," member of the Initiative Executive Body Jawhar Bin Mubarak stated with reference to President Kais Saied.

Algeria wins Arab Cup final over neighbours Tunisia

18 Dec 2021; MEMO: Extra-time goals by substitute Amr Sayoud and Yacine Brahimi gave Algeria a 2-0 win over neighbours Tunisia in the Arab Cup final at the Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday, reports Reuters.

It added the Arab crown to the Africa Cup of Nations title Algeria won in 2019, and will defend in Cameroon next month.

The 31-year-old Sayoud made his international debut in Algeria's opening game of the tournament but did not play again until coming on just past the hour mark in the final.

Report: Iran announces 1st case of omicron variant

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran has detected its first case of infection by the new omicron variant of the coronavirus, state TV reported Sunday.

The announcement comes as the variant spreads around the globe less than a month after scientists alerted the World Health Organization to the concerning-looking version.

Iran has vaccinated some 60% of its population of roughly 85 million people with two doses of coronavirus vaccines.

Israeli PM urges citizens to vaccinate as omicron spreads

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s prime minister warned citizens against the spread of the new, highly infectious variant of coronavirus on Sunday and urged them to vaccinate.

Naftali Bennett told ministers that there was already community transmission of the omicron variant in Israel and a rise in the country’s coronavirus infection rate. He called the omicron variant “very infectious.”
