Syria: Cautious calm prevails in northern Syria after Sochi summit

30 Sep 2021; MEMO: A state of cautious calm has prevailed in cities and towns in north-western Syria where no Russian warplanes have been monitored as the summit that brought Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin together came to an end.

Local sources told Aram news site that apart from some bombings in Jabal Al-Zawiya, south of Idlib, no major escalation has been recorded.

Ukraine signs memorandum on training and maintenance centres for Turkish drones

29 Sep 2021; MEMO: Ukraine on Wednesday signed a memorandum to establish joint training and maintenance centres for Turkish armed drones, a statement on President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's website said, Reuters reports.

Ukraine has previously bought the drones from the Turkish defence technology company Baykar to bolster its armed forces in their fight against Russian-backed separatists in the war in the eastern Donbass region.

EU to provide nearly $174m extra fund for Syrian refugees in Turkey

29 Sep 2021; MEMO: EU ambassadors approved on Wednesday €149.6 million ($174 million) extra funding for Syrian refugees in Turkey, Anadolu reports.

The financial support will extend the bloc's multi-purpose cash assistance program that provides monthly transfers for the most vulnerable refugees in the country, the Council of the EU wrote in a press release.

Palestine: Settlers strike 4-year-old Palestinian on the head with rocks

30 Sep 2021; MEMO: A four-year-old Palestinian suffered head injuries on Tuesday after illegal Israeli settlers threw rocks at Palestnians in the occupied South Hebron Hills.

Muhammad Hamamdeh was injured after being hit on the head with a stone which had been thrown by the settlers, he was transferred to the Soroka Medical Centre in Beersheba where he received treatment for a fractured skull.

Spy cell leaking details of Turkey defence projects to Israel

23 Sep 2021; MEMO: Turkish media has raised concerns that a spy cell has leaked technology projects to Israeli companies at a time when the country's public prosecutor has charged 11 people with leaking information about Turkey's defence industries to international companies.

Yeni Safak said Turkey's defence industries have developed significantly over the past few years, with its drones being at the forefront of its international weapons trade. This, it added, will allow Turkey to move into a new phase in its arms sales.

Israeli FM Lapid heads to Bahrain for first official visit

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s foreign minister arrived in Bahrain on Thursday, the first high-level visit to the small Gulf state by a senior Israeli official since the signing last year of a landmark agreement to establish diplomatic ties.

Yair Lapid landed in Bahrain’s capital, Manama, for meetings with his Bahraini counterpart and to inaugurate Israel’s embassy. It was the first official visit by an Israeli Cabinet member.

After Lapid landed, Bahrain carrier Gulf Air launched its first direct flight between Manama and Tel Aviv.

World Bank leader arrives in Sudan, 1st visit in 50 years

CAIRO (AP) — The head of the World Bank has arrived in Sudan, from where he will give a virtual address to the annual meetings of the financial institution and the International Monetary Fund on Thursday.

David Malpass landed in Khartoum late Wednesday in the first visit for a World Bank president to the East African nation in more than 50 years, according to the prime minister’s office.

Beset by inflation, Iranians struggle with high food prices

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Mehdi Dolatyari watched with dread in recent months as once-affordable goods at his central Tehran supermarket soared out of reach for his customers. Iranians who previously bought sacks of staple foods at the store now struggle to scrape together enough for meals, as the country’s currency sinks to new lows against the dollar.

“Rice is awfully expensive,” Dolatyari said, describing how its price has nearly doubled.

Egyptian Court Sentences Three Muslim Brotherhood Members To Death, Over Murdering Policeman, Civilian

CAIRO, Sept 29 (NNN-MENA) – An Egyptian court, yesterday, sentenced three members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood to death, and nine others to life in prison, over the killing a policeman and a civilian.

The crime dates back to 2014, when the convicted Islamists showered a policeman, who worked in securing ports, and his uncle, a driver, with fire, which caused their immediate death.

The Mansoura Criminal Court has also sentenced ten years in prison, for one person, over the same charges and acquitted six others.
