Afghan paper reveals details of ex-president Ghani’s journey to UAE via Uzbekistan

CAIRO, October 3. /TASS/: The former president of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, fled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in August via Uzbekistan, using a presidential helicopter and subsequently a plane of Kazakhstan’s FlyJet air carrier, a source close the ex-leader was quoted as saying by Afghanistan’s Hashte Subh Daily.

First-ever parliamentary elections held in Qatar

CAIRO, October 3. /TASS/: The first parliamentary election in the history of Qatar was held on Saturday, with a turnout of more than 44%, the Qatar News Agency reported.

The vote count is still in process.

Voters were to elect 30 parliamentarians, who will comprise two thirds of the parliament. In accordance with the country’s constitution, one third will be appointed by the Emir of Qatar. A total of 233 candidates are taking part in the polls. About 10% of candidates are women.

Palestinian President To Go For Other Choices If Israel Rejects Two-State Solution

RAMALLAH, Oct 3 (NNN-WAFA) – Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, yesterday said, Israel’s rejection of the two-state solution will oblige the Palestinians to go for other political choices.

Abbas made the remarks, during a meeting held with representatives of Bethlehem and Hebron, at his office in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

According to report, Abbas told the representatives that Israel’s rejection of the two-state solution will “force us to go for other options.”

Kuwait Launches Tree-Planting Campaign To Address Climate Challenges

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 3 (NNN-KUNA) – Kuwait launched yesterday, a tree-planting campaign in the Capital Governorate, in an endeavour to address climate challenges.

The campaign was organised by the Kuwait Public Authority Of Agriculture Affairs And Fish Resources (PAAF). Dozens of volunteers participated in planting trees in the median strip of Jamal Abdul Nasser Street.

Jordan's Abdullah receives first call from Syria's Assad since start of conflict

AMMAN, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Jordan's King Abdullah received a phone call from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the royal palace said on Sunday in what officials said was the first such communication since the start of the conflict in Syria a decade ago.

The conversation was the latest step in a recent normalisation of ties between leaders who had long been on opposing sides in Syria's civil war, with Jordan supporting Syrian Western-backed mainstream rebels seeking to drive Assad from power.

EU foreign policy chief says discussed nuclear talks, Afghanistan in Saudi visit

RIYADH, Oct 3 (Reuters) - European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said during a visit to Saudi Arabia on Sunday that he had briefed his partners about the prospects of restarting nuclear talks with Iran and hoped that would happen "soon".

Borrell, speaking at a joint news conference with his Saudi counterpart, said he had also exchanged views on Afghanistan and Yemen. He said the EU was ready to pursue trade deals with Gulf Arab countries.

Thousands rally for Tunisian president urging change to political system

TUNIS, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Thousands of supporters of Tunisian President Kais Saied rallied in the capital and other cities on Sunday to back his suspension of parliament and promises to change the political system, acts his critics call a coup.

The demonstration of at least 8,000 people in central Tunis was by far the biggest since Saied seized executive power in July - a show of support by his supporters that dwarfed two protests over the previous two weekends against his actions.

UAE official says time to manage rivalry with Iran and Turkey

DUBAI, Oct 3 (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates is trying to manage long-running rivalries with Iran and Turkey through dialogue to avoid any new confrontations in the region as the Gulf state hones in on its economy post COVID-19, a senior official said.

Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, told a conference on Saturday there was uncertainty about the United States commitment to the region and concern about a "looming cold war" between Washington and Beijing.

U.S. should unfreeze Iranian assets to show goodwill in nuclear talks: Iran's FM

TEHRAN, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said on Saturday that he demanded the United States to show the "true will" of reaching an agreement with Iran by liberating part of Iranian assets frozen abroad under U.S. sanctions.

"If (U.S. President Joe) Biden's intentions are serious, he must first issue a serious signal, and one of those signs is to release at least 10 billion U.S. dollars of our own money," Amir Abdollahian said in an interview on Iran's IRIB state TV.
