China: Beijing calls US claims over balloons ‘information warfare’

BEIJING (AP) — China on Thursday said U.S. accusations that a downed Chinese balloon was part of an extensive surveillance program amount to “information warfare against China.”

The Pentagon on Wednesday said the Chinese balloon shot down off the South Carolina coast Saturday was part of a program involving a number of such airships that China has been operating for “several years.”

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his young daughter took center stage at a huge military parade, fueling speculation that she is being primed as a future leader of the isolated country as her father showed off his latest, largest nuclear missiles.

Wednesday night’s parade in the capital, Pyongyang, featured the newest hardware in Kim’s growing nuclear arsenal, including what experts said was possibly a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile he could test in the coming months.

US general to aggressors: Allies are battle-ready in Asia

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — American forces and their allies in Asia are ready for battle after years of joint combat exercises, a United States general said Wednesday, adding that Russia’s setbacks in Ukraine should serve as a warning to potential Asian aggressors like China and North Korea.

U.S. treaty allies like the Philippines, Japan and Australia, among others, “have shown that they will band together, that they will not stand for aggression from these nations that have decided they want to change the world order out here,” Maj. Gen. Joseph Ryan said.

Japan’s Softbank Group Reported 6.9 Billion USD Net Loss In Apr-Dec

TOKYO, Feb 8 (NNN-NHK) – SoftBank Group Corp., yesterday announced a net loss of 912.5 billion yen (6.90 billion U.S. dollars), in the Apr-Dec period.

The figure compares to a net profit of 392.6 billion yen (2.97 billion dollars), booked a year earlier, with the losses in the recording period attributed in part to the yen’s weakness and a global stock slump, amid global inflation, the group reported.

Uzbekistan's foreign trade turnover reaches 50 bln USD in 2022

TASHKENT, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Uzbekistan's foreign trade turnover increased 18.6 percent year-on-year to 50 billion U.S. dollars in 2022, the country's Statistics Agency said Wednesday.

Uzbek exports amounted to 19.3 billion dollars and imports to 30.7 billion dollars in 2022, data showed.

In 2021, the country's foreign trade turnover stood at 42.2 billion dollars, according to the agency.

Tourist vehicle crash kills 6 in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- A fatal crash involving a tourist van left six people dead near Genting Highlands in Pahang state, authorities said on Wednesday.

At around 1:15 p.m. local time on Wednesday, the van with 14 passengers on board was descending from Genting Highlands, Pahang Fire and Rescue Department director Wan Mohammad Zaidi Wan Isa told the state news agency Bernama.

Eight others were injured in the accident and the victims were taken to the Bentong Hospital and Selayang Hospital, said Wan Mohammad.

South Korean lawmakers impeach minister over crowd crush

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s opposition-controlled parliament on Wednesday voted to impeach the country’s interior and safety minister, Lee Sang-min, holding him responsible for government failures in disaster planning and the response that likely contributed to the high death toll in a crowd crush that killed nearly 160 people in October.

The impeachment suspends Lee from his duties and the country’s Constitutional Court has 180 days to rule on whether to unseat him for good or give him back the job.

US forces returning to Philippines to counter China threats

SUBIC BAY, Philippines (AP) — Once-secret ammunition bunkers and barracks lay abandoned, empty and overrun by weeds — vestiges of American firepower in what used to be the United States’ largest overseas naval base at Subic Bay in the northern Philippines.

But that may change in the near future.
