Russia’s Proton-M rocket with telecoms satellite for Angola blasts off from Baikonur

BAIKONUR COSMODROME /Kazakhstan/, October 12. /TASS/: A Proton-M carrier rocket with an AngoSat-2 telecoms satellite for Angola blasted off from site No. 81 at the Baikonur spaceport, a TASS correspondent reported from the scene.

The rocket’s head unit comprising a DM-03 booster and the satellite was set to separate from the rocket’s upper stage in 584 seconds after the launch. It will take the booster several hours to deliver the satellite into the designated orbit.

AirAsia boosts regional inbound tourism in Malaysia’s Penang with new Bali route

GEORGE TOWN (Malaysia), Oct 12 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia’s northern state of Penang is set to receive more inbound travellers with the launch of AirAsia’s new direct route from Bali, scheduled to start on Oct 20 this year.

State Tourism and Creative Economy committee chairman, Yeoh Soon Hin said he was confident that the route would be popular and provide numerous benefits to the local communities through the multiplier effect of tourism spending as well as employment opportunities.

Thailand: Graft convictions extend Suu Kyi’s prison term to 26 years

BANGKOK (AP) — A court in military-ruled Myanmar convicted the country’s ousted leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, on two more corruption charges Wednesday, with two three-year sentences to be served concurrently, adding to previous convictions that now leave her with a 26-year total prison term, a legal official said.

Global shares mixed, British pound weakens against dollar

TOKYO (AP) — Global shares were mixed Wednesday as traders braced for updates on inflation, retail sales and corporate earnings.

The British pound weakened against the U.S. dollar after the governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, confirmed the bank will not extend beyond Friday an emergency debt-buying plan introduced last month to stabilize financial markets.

Global shares fall on tech sector losses, recession fears

TOKYO (AP) — Asian and European shares were mostly lower Tuesday as losses in the technology sector weighed on global benchmarks.

France’s CAC 40 dipped 0.6% to 5,807.12. Germany’s DAX lost 0.7% to 12,183.60. Britain’s FTSE 100 dropped 1.2% to 6,878.65. The future for the Dow industrials was down 0.7% at 29,059.00. The contract for the S&P 500 lost 0.8% to 3,597.00.

Tourists flock to Japan after COVID restrictions lifted

TOKYO (AP) — Eager to admire colorful foliage, eat sushi and go shopping, droves of tourists from abroad began arriving in Japan on Tuesday, with the end of pandemic-fighting border restrictions that had been in place for more than two years.

“We got the news that we can finally come. We are really, really happy,” said Nadine Lackmann, a German who was among the crowd of tourists arriving at Tokyo’s Haneda airport.
