Taiwan denounces China's peaceful 'reunification' pledge

TAIPEI/BEIJING, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Taiwan will never allow China to "meddle" in its future, the government said on Wednesday, after a Chinese government spokesperson said Beijing was willing to make the utmost effort to strive for a peaceful "reunification" with the island.

China claims democratically-governed Taiwan as its own territory. Taiwan's government rejects China's sovereignty claims.

Cambodia raises minimum wage for garment factory workers for 2023

PHNOM PENH, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Wednesday set a new monthly minimum wage for workers in the country's garment, footwear and travel goods sector at some 200 U.S. dollars from 2023, up 3.09 percent from the current level of 194 U.S. dollars, Labor Minister Ith Samheng said.

The announcement came after the National Council for Minimum Wage voted on a minimum wage of about 198 U.S. dollars per month for next year, which was then added by 2 U.S. dollars by the government.

Malaysia’s palm products export for January-June 2022 reaches US$15.6 bln

MIRI (Malaysia), Sept 20 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia’s palm products export revenue increased significantly for the first six months of this year, totalling 14.05 million tonnes with a value of RM71.02 billion (US$15.6 billion) recorded during the period.

Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Willie Mongin said in the same period last year, the export of the product was recorded at 11.54 million tonnes with a value of RM45.75 billion (US$10 billion).

China quarantine bus crash prompts outcry over ‘zero COVID’

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A nighttime bus crash that killed 27 people in southwest China this week has set off a storm of anger online over the harshness of the country’s strict COVID-19 policies.

The initial police report did not say who the passengers were and where they were going, but it later emerged they were headed to a quarantine location outside their city of Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province.

Storm damages space center in Japan, 130K still lack power

TOKYO (AP) — A tropical storm that dumped heavy rain as it cut across Japan moved into the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday after killing two and injuring more than 100, paralyzing traffic and leaving thousands of homes without power.

New damage was reported in southern Japan, where Typhoon Nanmadol hit over the weekend before weakening as it moved north.

Kyrgyz, Tajik security chiefs sign protocol on establishment of peace

Malaysia Reported 1,639 New COVID-19 Infections, Four New Deaths

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Malaysia reported 1,639 new COVID-19 infections, as of midnight, bringing the country’s national total to 4,818,890, according to the health ministry.

There are nine new imported cases, with 1,630 cases being local transmissions, data released on the ministry’s website showed.

Another four deaths have been reported, pushing the death toll to 36,312.

The ministry reported 2,056 new recoveries, bringing the total number of cured and discharged to 4,756,967.

China lodges complaint after Biden says U.S. would defend Taiwan in a Chinese invasion

BEIJING, Sept 19 (Reuters) - The Chinese foreign ministry said on Monday that China has lodged "stern representations" with the United States, after U.S. President Joe Biden said U.S. forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.

China reserves the right to take all necessary measures in response to activities that split the nation apart, said Mao Ning, spokesperson at the foreign ministry, at a regular media briefing.

Witnesses: Myanmar air attack kills 13, including 7 children

BANGKOK (AP) — Government helicopters have attacked a school and village in north-central Myanmar, killing at least 13 people including seven children, a school administrator and an aid worker said Monday.

Civilian casualties often occur in attacks by the military government on pro-democracy insurgents and their allies. However, the number of children killed in the air attack last Friday in Tabayin township in Sagaing region appeared to be the highest since the army seized power in February last year, ousting the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.
