Kazakhstan: NASA representatives arrive at Baikonur over first cross flight aboard Soyuz

BAIKONUR /Kazakhstan/, September 18. /TASS/: A US delegation with NASA representatives has arrived at Baikonur, ahead of the first cross flight aboard a Soyuz spacecraft, the Roscosmos press service told journalists on Sunday.

"A US delegation has arrived at Baikonur to participate in the events of the first cross flight aboard a Soyuz spacecraft - they are representatives of NASA and relatives of astronaut Frank Rubio," the press service said. The NASA delegation is led by Kenneth Bowersox, the state corporation specified.

Cambodian PM Ordered Crackdown On All Types Of Illegal Gambling

PHNOM PENH, Sept 18 (NNN-AKP) – Cambodian Prime Minister, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, yesterday, ordered a nationwide crackdown on all types of illegal gambling, including lottery, cock fight and poker.

“I’d like to issue a strict order to all municipal or provincial governors, to take immediate action to suppress all types of illegal gambling,” he said, in a voice message, released publicly.

He also warned to sack any municipal or provincial governors or officials, who failed to curb illegal gambling in their respective localities.

Kyrgyz-Tajik border conflict death toll rises to 81

BISHKEK, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan said on Sunday the death toll from their border conflict had risen to 81 people, as a fragile ceasefire held between two Central Asian nations for a second day and their mutual ally Russia urged a de-escalation.

The former Soviet republics clashed over a border dispute on Sept. 14-16, accusing each other of using tanks, mortars, rocket artillery and assault drones to attack outposts and nearby settlements. 

China, Russia to hold meetings on security, law-enforcement

BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, will travel to China for the 17th round of China-Russia strategic security consultation and the 7th meeting of the China-Russia law-enforcement and security cooperation mechanism from September 18 to 19, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning announced on Sunday.

Japanese cabinet's approval rate dives into "danger zone": poll

TOKYO, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Japanese Cabinet's public approval rating plummeted to 29 percent, dropping below 30 percent into a "danger zone", Japan's newspaper Mainichi Shimbun's latest survey showed Sunday.

The latest opinion poll has shown that the support rate of the Japanese government headed by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stood at 29 percent, down 7 percentage points from the 36 percent in the previous survey in August, a record low since Kishida took office in October 2021.

Powerful typhoon pounds southern Japan; thousands evacuated

TOKYO (AP) — A powerful typhoon approaching southern Japan pounded the region with strong winds and heavy rain Sunday, causing blackouts, paralyzing ground and air transportation and prompting the evacuation of thousands of people.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said Typhoon Nanmadol was near the southern island of Yakushima, packing maximum winds of 162 kilometers (101 miles) per hour. It slowly headed north to the country’s main southern island of Kyushu where it could make landfall later Sunday.

Nanmadol is forecast to turn east and reach Tokyo on Tuesday.

Strong Taiwan earthquake traps people, derails train

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A strong earthquake shook much of Taiwan on Sunday, toppling a three-story building and trapping two people inside and knocking part of a passenger train off its tracks.

The magnitude 6.8 quake was the largest among dozens that have rattled the island’s southeastern coast since Saturday evening, when a 6.4 quake struck the same area.

Most of the damage appeared to be north of the epicenter, which Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau said was in the town of Chishang at the relatively shallow depth of 7 kilometers (4 miles).

China values UN relationship despite human rights criticism

BEIJING (AP) — As world leaders gather in New York at the annual U.N. General Assembly, rising superpower China is also focusing on another United Nations body that is meeting across the Atlantic Ocean in Geneva.

Chinese diplomats are speaking out and lobbying others at an ongoing session of the Human Rights Council to thwart a possible call for further scrutiny of what it calls its anti-extremism campaign in Xinjiang, following a United Nations report on abuses against Uyghurs and other largely Muslim ethnic groups in the western China border region.
