Palestine: PA backs China in 'preserving its sovereignty'

03 August 2022; MEMO: The Palestinian Authority said yesterday that it supports China as it seeks to preserve its "sovereignty and territorial integrity".

In an official statement, the PA presidency called for "any actions that contradict with a one-China policy" to be stopped. "Beijing has the right to defend its sovereignty, security and development interests," insisted the presidency office.

Attacks on Taiwan websites likely work of Chinese 'hacktivists' - researchers

TAIPEI/WASHINGTON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Digital attacks against Taiwanese government websites ahead of U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's arrival in Tapei on Tuesday were likely launched by Chinese activist hackers rather than the Chinese government, a cybersecurity research organisation said.

The website of Taiwan's presidential office was targeted by a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on Tuesday and was at one point malfunctioning, the office said in a statement.

China to launch 'targeted military operations' due to Pelosi visit

BEIJING, Aug 2 (Reuters) - The Chinese military has been put on high alert and will launch "targeted military operations" in response to U.S. House Speaker Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, China's defence ministry said on Tuesday night.

Separately, the People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theatre Command said it will conduct joint military operations near Taiwan from Tuesday night.

Pelosi leaves Malaysia, tensions rise over Taiwan visit

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi left Malaysia on Tuesday and was expected to visit Taiwan, escalating tensions with Beijing, which claims the self-ruled island as its own territory.

The plane carrying Pelosi and her delegation left from a Malaysian air force base after a brief stopover that included a lunch meeting with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, an official said on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to release details to the media.

Approval Rating For Japan’s Kishida Cabinet Declined To Record Low

TOKYO, Aug 1 (NNN-NHK) – The approval rating for Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida’s cabinet, decreased to its lowest-ever 51.0 percent, compared to a record high of 63.2 percent just weeks ago, a Kyodo News survey showed, yesterday.

According to the result of the two-day nationwide telephone survey, the approval rating this weekend was the Kishida administration’s lowest, since it took office in Oct, 2021.

Marcos rules out Philippines rejoining ICC ahead of plan to resume probe

MANILA, Aug 1 (Reuters) - President Ferdinand Marcos Jr on Monday ruled out the Philippines rejoining the International Criminal Court (ICC), whose prosecutor plans to resume an investigation into the previous government's bloody "war on drugs".

The Philippines withdrew from the ICC in 2019, with then President Rodrigo Duterte accusing it of prejudice by starting a preliminary examination into thousands of killings by police.

USA: Pelosi to visit Taiwan, local media say, despite China warnings

TAIPEI/BEIJING, Aug 1 (Reuters) - U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi was set to visit Taiwan on Tuesday, Taiwanese media reported on Monday, citing unidentified sources, as China warned that its military would never "sit idly by" if she were to visit the self-ruled island claimed by Beijing.

One of the newspapers, the Liberty Times, said Pelosi was scheduled to visit Taiwan's parliament on Wednesday morning before continuing her Asia trip, which began earlier on Monday in Singapore. Reuters could not immediately confirm the reports.
