Japan's revitalization minister appointed to new post to support startups

TOKYO, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Japan's revitalization minister Daishiro Yamagiwa on Monday was appointed to a newly-created ministerial post that will support startup companies as part of the government's push to promote economic growth.

The Japanese government announced that Yamagiwa will concurrently serve as minister in charge of startups.

Pelosi meets Singapore leaders at start of Asia tour

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi held talks with officials in Singapore on Monday at the start of her Asian tour, as questions swirled over a possible stop in Taiwan that has fueled tension with Beijing.

Pelosi met with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, President Halimah Yacob and other Cabinet members, the Foreign Ministry said.

China to organize extensive course on BRI Progress for Pakistan

BEIJING, July 31 (APP): The International Cooperation Centre (ICC) of China National Development and Reform Commission will organise an extensive course on BRI Progress for Pakistan from August 3 to August 23.

As many as 25 government officials, scholars and businessmen will take part in the online classes, a document states, China Economic Net (CEN) reported.

Malaysia Reported 4,271 New COVID-19 Infections, Four New Deaths

KUALA LUMPUR, Jul 31 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Malaysia reported 4,271 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight, bringing the national total to 4,677,270, according to the health ministry.

There are three new imported cases, with 4,268 cases being local transmissions, data released on the ministry’s website showed.

Four more deaths were reported, pushing the death toll to 35,960.

The ministry reported 5,553 new recoveries, bringing the total number of cured and discharged to 4,594,296.

Slim majority of Japanese oppose state funeral for ex-PM Shinzo Abe, poll shows

TOKYO, July 31 (Reuters) - Just over half of Japanese oppose plans for a state funeral for Shinzo Abe, the former prime minister whose assassination this month shocked the nation, an opinion poll showed on Sunday.

The cabinet decided to hold a state funeral for Abe, Japan's longest-serving but divisive premier, on Sept. 27 at Tokyo's Nippon Budokan.

About 53% of respondents to a Saturday-Sunday Kyodo news agency survey expressed opposition to a state funeral for Abe, exceeding the 45% who favoured a state funeral.

Myanmar extends COVID-19 restrictions until end of August

YANGON, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar announced the extension of COVID-19 preventive measures until Aug. 31, according to the Central Committee on Prevention, Control and Treatment for COVID-19 on Sunday.

The extension is applied to all COVID-19 restrictions that expired on July 31, except the ones that will be eased, the committee said in a statement.

The statement added that the extension covers all orders, announcements, directives previously issued by respective government organizations and ministries in order to contain COVID-19.

WHO-Cambodia official urges people to get booster doses as more COVID-19 cases detected

PHNOM PENH, July 31 (Xinhua) -- World Health Organization (WHO) representative to Cambodia Li Ailan on Sunday called on people to get their booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines as the number of daily cases has seen an uptick.

Thirty-six new cases were confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests on Sunday, lifting the national case tally to 136,789, with 133,517 recoveries and 3,056 deaths, the health ministry said, adding that no new deaths have been reported since April.

Pelosi confirms trip to Asia, but no mention of Taiwan

BEIJNG (AP) — The speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, confirmed Sunday she will visit four Asian countries this week but made no mention of a possible stop in Taiwan that has fueled tension with Beijing, which claims the island democracy as its own territory.

Pelosi said in a statement she is leading a congressional delegation to Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan to discuss trade, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, security and “democratic governance.”

Zambia debt relief pledge clears way for $1.4 billion program, says IMF

JAKARTA/LONDON, July 30 (Reuters) - Zambia's creditors pledged to negotiate a restructuring of the country's debts on Saturday, a move IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva welcomed as "clearing the way" for a $1.4 billion Fund programme.

The creditor committee, co-chaired by China and France, said in a statement released by G20 chair Indonesia that it supported Zambia's "envisaged IMF upper credit tranche program and its swift adoption by the IMF Executive Board".
