SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — U.S. President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said after meeting Saturday that they will consider expanded joint military exercises to deter the nuclear threat from North Korea at a time when there’s little hope of real diplomacy on the matter.

Indonesia’s Foreign Debt Falls To 411.5 Billion USD In Q1

JAKARTA, May 20 (NNN-ANTARA) – Indonesia recorded foreign debt of 411.5 billion U.S. dollars, in the first quarter this year, down from 415.7 billion dollars in the previous quarter, Bank Indonesia said yesterday.

Erwin Haryono, head of the Communications Department of the country’s central bank, said, this number decreased by 1.1 percent year on year, deeper than the contraction in the previous quarter which was only 0.3 percent.

“This development was caused by the decline in the position of the public and private sectors’ foreign debt,” said Haryono.

59 Countries Participate In International Economic Summit Russia-Islamic World

KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 (NNN-Bernama) — Fifty-nine countries are taking part in the ongoing 13th International Economic Summit: Russia-Islamic World (Kazan Summit), Russia’s largest platform for cooperation with the Islamic world.

The three-day summit began on Thursday at Kazan City, which is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, which witnessed the participation of 44 Muslim countries, among the total 59 countries. Kazan has received the status of “OIC Youth Capital – 2022”.

First stop Samsung: Biden touts South Korean role in securing global supply chains

PYEONGTAEK, South Korea, May 20 (Reuters) - Joe Biden's first stop on his inaugural trip to Asia as U.S. president on Friday was a massive Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) semiconductor plant, underscoring a message of economic security with an eye on China and the war in Ukraine.

Biden landed at the U.S. military's Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, south of Seoul, and immediately drove to Samsung's nearby factory, the largest semiconductor plant in the world. There he greeted South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, a relative newcomer to politics, for the first time in person. 

Fire breaks out in crowded slum in Philippine capital

MANILA, May 19 (Xinhua) -- A fire raced through a slum near the main port in the Philippine capital on Thursday night, threatening many vessels docked in the area, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.

PCG spokesperson Commodore Armando Balilo said the fire broke out before 8 p.m. local time in the crowded Baseco slum along the rim of Manila Bay and continued to rage for nearly two hours.

"Many boats could not leave the area due to low tide," Balilo told reporters. He posted videos and pictures of the fire engulfing dozens of shanties along the river on social media.

Indonesia: Ramos-Horta sworn in for 2nd time as Timor Leste president

JAKARTA, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jose Ramos-Horta was inaugurated and sworn in early Friday morning as the president of Timor Leste for the period of 2022 to 2027, making it the second time for him to lead Southeast Asia's youngest nation.

Ramos-Horta, 72, is also known as one of Timor Leste's founding fathers. His inauguration came on the celebration of Timor Leste's Independence Day, which falls on May 20.

China's State Council appoints John Lee as HKSAR chief executive

BEIJING, May 20 (Xinhua) -- The State Council, China's cabinet, decided at a meeting Friday to appoint John Lee as the sixth-term chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Lee will assume office on July 1, 2022.

Premier Li Keqiang presided over the meeting and signed a State Council decree on the appointment.

Lee won the chief executive election on May 8.
