North Korea boasts recovery as WHO worries over missing data

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Wednesday added hundreds of thousands of infections to its growing pandemic caseload but also said that a million people have already recovered from suspected COVID-19 just a week after disclosing an outbreak, a public health crisis it appears to be trying to manage in isolation as global experts express deep concern about dire consequences.

Kashmir issue core obstacle to peace, stability in South Asia: Prof Cheng

BEIJING, May 17 (APP): The Kashmir issue is the core obstacle to the normalization of relations between India and Pakistan and to peace and stability in the South Asian Sub-continent, Cheng Xizhong, Visiting Professor of Southwest University of Political Science and Law said on Tuesday.

India changed the status of Kashmir on August 5, 2019, which further complicated the Kashmir issue. Therefore, the key to normalizing India-Pakistan relations is for India to take the initiative to immediately restore the original status of Kashmir, he said in a statement.

Pakistani pine nuts exports to China up $25 million in first quarter

BEIJING, May 17 (APP): Pakistani Pine nuts exports to China in the first three months of this year achieved a historical figure of $25.13 million, according to the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC).

Data showed that in the first three months of 2022, China imported 2,299.21 tons of Pakistani pine nuts and was one of the main destinations of Pakistani pine nuts.

Overall, China has imported 7,780.32 tons of pine nuts around the world valued at $57.05 million, of which 44.04% by value and 29.55% weight is from Pakistan.

Tourism Malaysia to boost partnership with international airlines to attract more tourists

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), May 16 (NNN-Bernama) — Tourism Malaysia is enhancing partnership with international airlines to welcome more tourists from West Asia back to Malaysia, said its director-general Zainuddin Abdul Wahab.

He said Tourism Malaysia is currently ramping up its marketing efforts to lure tourists from West Asia by launching roadshows in Iran, Oman and Qatar from May 13 to 21 in conjunction with Malaysia’s border reopening.

Japan to allow limited tour groups from May as step to full re-opening

TOKYO, May 17 (Reuters) - Japan said on Tuesday it would start conducting "test tourism" in the form of limited package tours in May as a way of gathering information prior to a full re-opening of the country to tourism.

Though tourism was a major pillar of Japan's economy, tourists have not been permitted to enter since it adopted strict border controls in 2020 at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Taiwan’s president condemns California church shooting

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan’s president has condemned the shooting at a Taiwanese church in California by a man reportedly driven by hatred of the island, while a lawmaker from her ruling party questioned whether Chinese propaganda was a motivating factor behind the violence.

President Tsai Ing-wen’s office issued a statement Tuesday saying she condemned “any form of violence,” extended her condolences to those killed and injured and had asked the island’s chief representative in the U.S. to fly to California to provide assistance.

Singapore foreign minister to visit Malaysia from May 17 to 19

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), May 16 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah will host his Singaporean counterpart Dr Vivian Balakrishnan in conjunction with the latter’s three-day working visit to Malaysia starting tomorrow.

The Foreign Ministry, in a statement on Monday, said both ministers are scheduled to meet and exchange views on broad-ranging bilateral, regional and international issues of common interest.
