US satellite nearly struck Chinese space station, calls for immediate measures

BEIJING (AP) — China is calling on the United States to protect a Chinese space station and its three-member crew after Beijing complained that satellites launched by Elon Musk’s SpaceX nearly struck the station.

A foreign ministry spokesman accused Washington on Tuesday of ignoring its treaty obligations to protect the safety of the Tiangong station’s three-member crew following the July 1 and Oct. 21 incidents.

Hong Kong police raid pro-democracy news outlet, arrest 6

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong police raided the office of an online pro-democracy news outlet on Wednesday after arresting six people for conspiracy to publish a seditious publication, the latest moves in a crackdown on dissent in the city.

Those arrested were affiliated with Stand News, one of the most vocal pro-democracy news outlets in the city after the pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily ceased operations earlier this year.

Thailand Tightens COVID-19 Measures For Public Transport To Stem Omicron Spread

BANGKOK, Dec 28 (NNN-Bernama) — Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan o-cha today instructed relevant authorities to tighten COVID-19 measures for public transport during New Year holidays, in bid to halt a surge in infections as concern rises over the rapid spread of Omicron variant.

Government Spokesperson Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said Prayuth raised concerns over cross-provincial travel during the upcoming New Year holidays.

Malaysia Records 2,897 New COVID Cases On Tuesday

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 28 (NNN-Bernama) — The number of COVID-19 cases in Malaysia increased slightly with 2,897 from 2,757 on Monday, bringing the cumulative figure to 2,746,833.

Health director-general, Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that out of the new cases, 50 per cent were in categories 3, 4 and 5 while the rest were in categories 1 and 2, having slight or no symptoms.

Too Early To Ban Umrah Travel Over Omicron – Malaysian Minister

PUTRAJAYA, Dec 28 (NNN-Bernama) — The Malaysia’s Health Ministry (MOH) is of the view that it was still too early to impose a travel ban for the Umrah pilgrimage in Mecca following an increase in Omicron variant cases, its minister Khairy Jamaluddin said.

He said the ministry was currently monitoring case trends for the COVID-19 variant, besides making it mandatory for those returning from Umrah pilgrimage to undergo the seven-day home surveillance order (HSO) and to wear digital monitoring wristbands.

“We do not want to make a hasty decision in restricting Umrah travel.

Chinese citizens slam Musk online after space station near-misses

BEIJING, Dec 27 (Reuters) - Chinese citizens lashed out online against billionaire Tesla (TSLA.O) founder Elon Musk's space ambitions on Monday after China complained that its space station was forced to take evasive action to avoid collision with satellites launched by Musk's Starlink programme.

The satellites from Starlink Internet Services, a division of Musk's SpaceX aerospace company, had two "close encounters" with the Chinese space station on July 1 and Oct. 21, according to a document submitted by China earlier this month to the U.N.'s space agency.

Japan weighs providing COVID-19 booster shots for all: PM

TOKYO, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Tuesday the government will consider providing COVID-19 vaccine booster shots for all people in the country as much as possible, Kyodo News reported.

Kishida said in an interview with Kyodo News that the country's anti-virus measures will be made as fully operational, so people can feel safe.

Japan has started giving third shots to health care workers since the beginning of December, and senior citizens will follow from February next year, and then the general people later.

China-funded medical building in Cambodia's capital passes completion inspection

PHNOM PENH, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- A China-aided medical building at the Cambodia-China Friendship Preah Kossamak Hospital in Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, successfully passed the completion inspection on Tuesday, the contractor, China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd., said in a news release.

The 11-story building has 400 beds and is equipped with high-tech medical equipment, the news release said, adding that it is divided into different units, including surgery, outpatient services, emergency, medical technology, hospitalization, and logistics.

Myanmar court postpones verdicts in 2nd case against Suu Kyi

BANGKOK (AP) — A court in military-ruled Myanmar postponed its verdicts Monday on two charges against ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi in which she is accused of importing and possessing walkie-talkies without following official procedures, a legal official familiar with the case said.

The case in the court in the capital, Naypyitaw, is among many brought against the 76-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate since the army seized power on Feb. 1, ousting her elected government and arresting top members of her National League for Democracy party.

NW China city opens freight train service to Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan

XI'AN, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- A train set off from Hanzhong City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, on Sunday bound for Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, marking the launch of a new China-Europe freight train service from the city.

The train by way of the provincial capital of Xi'an carried 767 tonnes of merchandise including baby carriages, clothes, stationery, ceramic tea sets and sanitary wares. It is expected to leave China via the land port of Horgos in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region en route to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
