China-Invested Ferronickel Smelter Put Into Production In Indonesia

JAKARTA, Dec 28 (NNN-ANTARA) – Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, attended, yesterday, the ceremony to mark a ferronickel smelter plant, invested by a Chinese company, starting production in Morowali Utara county, Central Sulawesi province.

The smelter, PT Gunbuster Nickel Industry, located at the PT Virtue Dragon Nickel Industry park, can produce an annual output of 1.8 million tonnes of ferronickel.

The project is invested by China’s Jiangsu Delong Nickel Industry Co. Ltd.

Malaysia’s Trade Hits Historical High In Jan-Nov 2021, Surpasses RM2 Trillion Mark

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 28 (NNN-Bernama) — Malaysia’s total trade surpassed the RM2 trillion (US$478 billion) mark for the first time in history, expanding 24.6 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM2.01 trillion (US$480 billion) from January to November 2021.

Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) said during the period, exports increased by 25.7 per cent y-o-y to RM1.11 trillion (RM1=US$4.184), imports rose by 23.3 per cent y-o-y to RM894.42 billion and trade surplus edged up by 36.2 per cent y-o-y to RM221.53 billion.

Typhoon Rai Death Toll In Philippines Surges To 389

MANILA, Dec 28 (NNN-PNA) – The death toll from Typhoon Rai in the Philippines has surged to 389, with 64 more missing, a government disaster agency said, yesterday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that, the typhoon, which made landfall in the Philippines on Dec 16, also injured 1,146.

The agency said, the the typhoon has affected more than 4.2 million people in 11 regions in central and southern parts of the Philippines, as well as, parts of the main Luzon Island.

Myanmar court postpones verdicts in 2nd case against Suu Kyi

BANGKOK (AP) — A court in military-ruled Myanmar postponed its verdicts Monday on two charges against ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi in which she is accused of importing and possessing walkie-talkies without following official procedures, a legal official familiar with the case said.

The case in the court in the capital, Naypyitaw, is among many brought against the 76-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate since the army seized power on Feb. 1, ousting her elected government and arresting top members of her National League for Democracy party.

More than 100 Japan flights cancelled due to heavy snow

TOKYO, Dec 26 (Reuters) - More than 100 domestic flights in Japan were grounded on Sunday due to heavy snow in the northern and western parts of the country, Japan's two biggest airlines said.

ANA Holdings (9202.T) had halted 79 flights as of 4 p.m. (0700 GMT), affecting about 5,100 passengers, said Hiroaki Hayakawa, an operations director for the airline.

Japan Airlines Co (9201.T) had cancelled 49 flights as of 4 p.m. (0700 GMT), affecting 2,460 passengers, a representative with the airline's operations division said.

China replaces Xinjiang Communist Party chief Chen

BEIJING, Dec 26 (Reuters) - China has replaced Chen Quanguo, who as Communist Party chief in the Xinjiang region oversaw a security crackdown targeting ethnic Uyghurs and other Muslims in the name of fighting religious extremism.

Chen, in his post since 2016, will move to another role and Ma Xingrui, governor of the coastal economic powerhouse Guangdong province since 2017, has replaced him, the official Xinhua News Agency said on Saturday. It gave no other details.

2.76 bln COVID-19 vaccine doses administered on Chinese mainland

BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Close to 2.76 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses had been administered on the Chinese mainland as of Saturday, data from the National Health Commission showed Sunday.

More than 1.2 billion people had been fully vaccinated as of Saturday, said the commission. 

China's Shenzhou-13 taikonaut exits spacecraft for second extravehicular activities

BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's Shenzhou-13 Taikonaut Ye Guangfu has been out of the space station core module Tianhe to start extravehicular activities (EVAs), the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) said on Sunday evening.

The Shenzhou-13 Taikonauts are conducting EVAs for the second time, the CMSA said.

Save the Children says staff missing after Myanmar massacre

BANGKOK (AP) — Two members of the international humanitarian group Save the Children were missing Saturday after Myanmar government troops rounded up villagers, some believed to be women and children, fatally shot more than 30 and burned the bodies, according to a witness and other reports.

Purported photos of the aftermath of the Christmas Eve massacre in eastern Mo So village, just outside Hpruso township in Kayah state where refugees were sheltering from an army offensive, spread on social media in the country, fueling outrage against the military that took power in February.
